The final group of the round includes Dres Reid, Adrian Lee (the guy who Mary cruelly cut during the home visit in season 7), Alexa Anderson, who you'll remember was under fire previously for not showing enough personality. They dance to The Wanted's "Glad You Came" which is hilarious. Lots of stalking around the stage for this group, calling themselves The Wolfpack. Afterwards, Tyce picks on Alexa. "I'm not enamored by your beauty anymore," he snits. The judges all basically tell Alexa they need her to deliver more TV-ready emotions, and while she's unable to rise to Mary's demand that she start screaming her emotions, she does start crying, which is basically all the judges ever want. She advances.
Stage Six: BALLROOM
The wonderful Jason Gilkison is here to teach these children some cha-cha. Cyrus, who has seriously emerged as the protagonist of this episode, struggles in rehearsals for this one. They dance this one to Jennifer Lopez's "Let's Get Loud," which seems to get used about once a season on this show. Everyone in Cyrus's group gets through EXCEPT Cyrus himself, who is asked to dance for his life. Again, I think this is mostly to get some more spotlight on Cyrus, but let's see.
Aubrey Klinger, our Lil' Mia Michaels, ends up getting CUT, which surprises me but maybe surprises her more. She has a real Chorus Line style breakdown, where she starts crying that she can't find work anywhere. Sobering.
On the flip side, zombie-dancing Stephan Stewart did well, as did ballet dancer Chehon Wespi-Tschopp, who has tanned himself out to fuck.
Poor emotionally battered Alexa Anderson is in the next group, and she's really expressive in this round. Jason says she was one of the best on stage, and he loved her personality. So THERE.
Cyrus dances for his life and I find myself increasingly unable to not stare at the earlobe thing. Stop doing that to yourselves, children! His solo involves his usual Japanese-android movements. The danger of this style, for me, is if you see it once, you've seen it all. But he gets yes votes across the board, duh, and he pledges to work even harder going forward.
Stage Seven: CONTEMPORARY
Fifty-two dancers left to take on Travis Wall's choreography. Nigel announces that no cuts will be made immediately after the dancers dance, but after the entire round. We don't get to see much of the smaller groups as they perform, but when they're all done, Nigel calls dancers back to the stage. All my favorites/the people who we've been following all night -- Cyrus, Alexa, Daniel Baker, Amelia, Lindsay Arnold, belly dancer Janelle Issis, Whitney Carson, Chehon, the girl who looks like Rihanna -- are in the first group called up. They all advance. The other 18 dancers ... Nigel says they're not sure of them and asks them to dance it again. At this point, Zombie Stefan is cut, as well as adorable Leo Reyes, who dances for his mom. Well, great, now I'm sad. Also out is girl krumper Mariah Spears.
