Subvulcanean Homesick Blues
Bones asks Chapel to leave. Poor Nurse Chapel. "Spock, what happened down there? The girl? The wedding?" Bones demands. Spock explains, "Hmm, most interesting. It must have been the combat, when I thought I had killed the Captain, I found that I had lost all interest in T'Pring. The madness was gone." The boatswain whistle sings out. Uhura tells Kirk that she's got a message from Starfleet Command for him, and Kirk tells her to relay it. "'Response to T'Pau's request for diversion of Enterprise to planet Vulcan, hereby approved. Any reasonable delay granted. Komack, Admiral, Starfleet Command,'" Uhura reads back. "Well, a little late but I'm glad they're seeing it our way. How about that T'Pau -- they couldn't turn her down," Kirk muses, and tells Chekov to lay in a course to Altair VI. "There's just one thing, Mr. Spock," Bones demands. "You can't tell me that when you first saw Jim alive, that you weren't on the verge of an emotional scene that would have brought the house down!" "Merely my quite logical relief that Starfleet had not lost a highly proficient captain," Spock comments. "Yes, Mr. Spock, I understand," Kirk says. "Thank you, Captain," Spock says. "Of course, Mr. Spock, your reaction was quite logical," Bones says sarcastically. Spock thanks him and goes to leave with Kirk. "In a pig's eye!" Bones snaps. I was wrong before -- that was the best line of the episode. Spock and Kirk stop and look at Bones, who stares back at them indignantly. "Come on, Spock, let's go mind the store," Kirk yuks, and leaves. Bones sniffs to himself as The Oboe And Trumpet Of Cracker-Barrel Dialogue lilt up the scale.
