YOU GRADE IT
Back down in Yosemite, Spock plucks his Vulcan lute in front of the campfire (alas for Mathra, no "Bitter Dregs" tonight), and when challenged by Kirk, "Are you just going to pluck that thing or are you going to play something?" he plays "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." Kirk sings out of tune and out of time. They sing in rounds. It's awful. You know, I've decided that this is a very male-centric movie. The three men sitting around a campfire farting through their whisky and beans; Spock and Bones having secret pain surrounding their fathers; Spock and Sybok's fraught fraternal relationship; Uhura naked and dancing in the sand with feathers; Bones, Kirk, and Spock as the Unbeatable Three; the close-up on the plaque reading "To boldly go where no man has gone before"; the whole God thing assuming the figure of a man; Sulu and Chekov checking out Klingon chicks...I'm not usually one for getting up on a soapbox and delivering a Women's Studies lecture based on perceived misogynistic undertones in the media, but this whole movie just drips with too much testosterone for my taste. I think Shatner was out to prove his manhood. Or something. Thanks for playing, buddy.
