When we return, we see that the latest iteration of "The Nicolas Cage Show" is Nic hosting a cooking show. Eh. It's not a bad idea, on the surface of it. But beyond the voice it's just...there. Up in Matt's office, Mary is flirting with him, noticing that he's wearing a jacket and tie. Matt says something about how all his heroes, in their photos, wore ties. Yeah, I'm guessing they also wrote stuff that got actual laughs, maybe try to emulate that. Marry downshifts into lawyer mode, telling Matt that Karen's lawyers "filed a retaliation claim." When Matt doesn't know what that means, Mary asks if Matt was ever called by a producer, Dan Spitzer, who was considering hiring Karen. Matt evades and says that the producer was asking about a lot of writers. "Was one of them Karen Salisburg?" asks Mary. Matt says yes. "Then don't play around with me," she says. And, really. Matt's whole attitude really betrays the fact that he thinks he did something wrong. Of course, Mary goes and ruins her one moment of professionalism by saying that if Matt's flirting with her, then that's okay. Ugh. Matt tells her to shut up for a second while he waits for a joke to land. It does, more or less, but Matt's not satisfied with the laugh it got. "You're so cute, I could just put your poster up in my dorm room," squeaks Mary. Okay, seriously? 1) Unprofessional, 2) annoying, 3) bordering on harassment itself, 4) what in the world has Matt done that's cute beyond mope, mope, glower, be rude, and return with a vengeance to the moping? Matt thinks she's talking gibberish, and she essentially admits as much. Because she is a Sorkin Female and those Sorkin Females may not make much sense most of the time, but they do spend morning, noon, and night trying to get the attention of whoever's standing in for Sorkin in a given scene. They're very much like Bond Girls that way. Or infants.
