Rachel the Photographer shows up at the house, and Johnny tries to avoid answering the door. Ava yells at him, and Johnny realizes he's busted. He opens the door to find Rachel, who apparently looks a lot hotter than she used to, because Johnny is flabbergasted. Rachel takes a call on her cell as Johnny gazes at her. Rachel hangs up, and clearly wants nothing to do with Johnny. If they wanted us to think Johnny was blown away by her hotness, they should have hired a hotter actress, or at least made it out like she was kind of a mess before. Because the first time I watched that scene, I totally didn't get what Johnny's problem was.
Jay checks out a photo of himself being awarded a trophy for winning a surfing competition. Erica walks in and says that it was an amazing summer. Jay pulls down his surfboard and lists off all the surfing legends that were around. Erica adds that "Sun" was there, too. Jay points out that Erica was only thirteen that summer, so he wonders how she can remember it. Because people don't form permanent memories until the age of fifteen? Erica says that everyone remembers the summer of 1997. So that puts Erica at about twenty, for those of you keeping track of ages. And we know that Jay is twenty-seven, from the episode where he filled out the apartment application, which means that he was twenty in 1997. Just keep that in mind for later. Jay concludes his reminiscing and puts the surfboard away. Erica asks if he ever thinks about going back to surfing, and Jay says, "Every day I breathe air." Which is a weird thing to say, because why couldn't he just say, "Every day."
Some dude shows up to help Rachel or work with Rachel in some capacity -- it doesn't matter because he's obviously just there to make Johnny jealous. Susannah meets the guy and then takes off to get them some green tea. Jealousy Guy takes off with Rachel for a tour, and Susannah asks Johnny if he's jealous. Well, obviously.
Bradin and Erica come into the surf shop. Bradin is all jazzed that he pulled off some surfing maneuver that I really don't care about. Jay is less than excited, and Bradin wants to show him the maneuver immediately, like, isn't Jay a little busy, I don't know, making a living right now? Jay tells Bradin to give up surfing immediately: "You're not that good. You're what surfers call a weekend Barney. That's it." Hee! I wish Jay had really meant that, and we weren't supposed to think that Jay is just taking out his bitter disappointment on Bradin. I'd like to know what kind of makeup Erica uses, because despite just finishing a surfing lesson, she still has a ton of it on.
