Everyone sits at the table, including Jay and Susannah. Ava tries to continue talking about the summer camp, even though no one cares. The kids grasp hands to say a prayer, and everyone plays along. Ava compliments Nikki's cooking, and then says that she doesn't have to cook every day. Nikki is mute. Derrick says that his mom's birthday is next week. Ava's face falls. Derrick says he doesn't know what to get her, and he doesn't know how to get the present up to heaven. Okay, he's supposed to be nine. Isn't that a question that a five- or six-year-old would ask? Is he slow? Ava gets all serious and kneels down next to Derrick to tell him that he is the best present that his mom ever got. Um, her other two children are RIGHT THERE. Ava's all proud of herself for dodging that bullet, and she tells Bradin that she found out about basketball tryouts. Bradin says he's not playing this year. Ava won't drop it, so Bradin excuses himself from the table. Good one, Ava.
Bradin sits on the beach, staring at the ocean. The four roommates just watch him. Wouldn't he notice that? Jay wants to show Bradin how to surf, but Ava's not so sure that it's safe. Jay persists, saying that Bradin can hear the ocean's voice. Susannah makes fun of Jay, who tells her that she hears shoes telling her to take them home. Are they really having this conversation? And am I really recapping it? I can answer the second part. I'm not. Johnny asks what the ocean's voice changes. Jay says that things change, and that it's okay. Ava says that Bradin has always been happy, and Nikki is in denial, and Derrick is trying to send presents to heaven. Yeah, I can't believe the kids aren't totally over their parents' sudden deaths. What losers! Ava agrees to let Jay try, and Jay says he'll have Bradin help him in the shop. Should they really be encouraging a kid whose parents just drowned to go into the ocean?
Okay, so apparently Jay owns a surf shop. We know that Ava and Susannah are unemployed, and we still have no idea what Johnny does, or how any of them can afford the rent on a house on the beach. At the surf shop, Jay helps Bradin pick out a board. Bradin says that he's not interested in taking surfing lessons from Jay, who replies that actually, Erica would be his teacher. Bradin turns and sees Erica, a hot brunette, talking to a bunch of kids. Bradin pops a boner and decides that surfing lessons are just the thing he needs.
Ava walks into the house carrying groceries. Susannah and her unflattering pink skirt announce that Lydia Channing is going to look at their line tomorrow. This is apparently big news. Susannah tells Ava to get back to work. Ava spots Nikki setting the table and asks if she wants to go swimming before dinner. Nikki says that dinner is in fifteen minutes. Ava tries a different tack, offering to take Nikki backstage at Fashion Week, as promised. Nikki thinks she has to watch Derrick. Ava thinks Susannah can do it, like, way to make that promise without checking with Susannah first. Nikki still doesn't want to go, and she runs up to her room. What about dinner?
