The Old Man and the Sea

When we return, Dean and Benny have made it back to the dinghy. They must have walked in silence up till now, because Dean keeps looking to Benny for his reaction. Finally, Benny asks, "Why'd you do it, Dean?" At first it sounds like he's asking why Dean killed Andrea, but he wants to know why Dean resurrected him. "You could have drained my soul into any culvert and no one would've been the wiser." Dean can't believe what he's hearing. He thinks his friend has gone off the deep end. Benny says he doesn't know what he is anymore. Dean gives him a worried look.

He doesn't tell Benny why he kept his promise, but he has a flashback to Purgatory that explains his loyalty. He, Benny and Castiel are on the run from the Leviathans, who blast down from the sky and hit the ground like meteors. They land as black goo, but coalesce into human form. Why pre-human monsters look like human beings in nice, black suits is a mystery. "Oh, great," Dean grumbles. He beheads the first Leviathan. Castiel turns just as another one rockets to the earth. This one turns into a woman. She tackles Castiel to the ground and opens her monstrous mouth wide to devour him. Benny lops off her head. Castiel looks up at Benny, wide-eyed. He's even more surprised when Benny holds out his hand and helps him back onto his feet. Dean looks on, stunned. This is the moment he started to trust Benny.

When they make their way back to the docks on the mainland, Sam is waiting for them. Benny introduces himself. As they shake hands, Sam realizes Benny isn't human. He reaches into his back pocket for a knife. Benny sees this, but doesn't pull away. Sam looks to Dean, who shakes his head: Don't kill this one. "I can see you two have a lot to talk about," Benny says, and takes his leave. Dean gives Sam a weary look, resigned to the inevitable tirade. Sam purses his lips and flares his nostrils, but he's too furious to speak. He can only glare at his brother in silence. The argument -- which will surely prove to be a pyramid of despair all its own -- will have to wait for another episode.
