Feat of Clay

With Grumpy gone, the others get back to sitting around and telling each other about what happened in the past. Sam says that the Nazis experimented on their prisoners, killing them so that they could come up with ways to reanimate them. Their end goal was to perfect a way of raising their own dead. The last page of the book contains a list of every dead Thule member who was reanimated. I hope somebody whipped out a camera phone at some point and took a picture of that page, just in case someone was to come along and try to steal the ledger. Sam, who must have done a lot of typing into that online translator, says that the necromancers also experimented with how to kill the reanimated corpses. It's just a simple matter of shooting them in the head, but you have to burn the corpse within 12 hours or it'll just pop back up again.

By now, the Nazi commandant has made his way to the library, having aged not a day in the last 70 years. Nazi magic is evil, but it sure does work. A lackey tells him that the security videos have been wiped. "Are you sure he's been murdered?" asks the lackey. "Thorwald was killed here, but not by a man," says the commandant. After wandering around a bit, he finds the disheveled shelves where the fight took place. He also finds a bit of dried clay and realizes somehow that they're dealing with the same golem from Belarus.

Back at Aaron's house, Dean is just getting off the phone with Garth. "All of Garth's contacts are stumped," he says. The Thule secret society really knows how to stay secret. Sam is also stumped about how they might go about killing the golem, if they need to. "The lore's all over the place," he says, poring over his laptop. Aaron overhears them planning to off his golem. He's none too pleased. "What gives you that right?" he asks. Sam points out that the golem was built for war and that Aaron isn't ready for that. Almost as if to prove Sam right, the commandant and a bunch of lackeys kick down Aaron's front door. Sam hides the ledger under his satchel. He and Dean don't have much chance to put up a fight before the Nazis pull out guns. One of the lackeys grabs Aaron. The golem charges into the room to rescue him. "Enough!" commands the commandant, just now coming into the house. "There you are, you grim piece of work," he says to the golem. "Eckhart," growls the golem, instantly recognizing him. He clomps towards his old enemy. Commandant Eckhart raises his hand and chants, "Clay of Adam, surrender your bond unto me." The golem grows still. His face goes blank. The gang seems well and truly screwed. Where's the Ark of the Covenant when you need it?
