The Hardy Boys Go From Wags To Witches

The motel: As Sam packs his clothes, a title card informs us that it's the day after Halloween. Uriel appears on the couch behind Sam. "Tomorrow is November 2nd. It's an anniversary for you, right?" Sam asks him what he's doing there. Uriel isn't inclined to answer the mud monkey's question. "It's the day Azazel killed your mother, and 22 years later -- your girlfriend, too. Must be difficult to bear, yet you brazenly use the powers he gave you -- his profane blood pumping through your veins." Meeee-ow. Sam says, "Excuse me?" Uriel reminds Sam he was told not to use his abilities, but Sam wants to know what he was supposed to do -- let the demon kill him, Dean and everyone? Uriel says, "You were told not to." Sammy starts to recap what would have happened had Sam Hain gotten loose in town, but Uriel cuts him off, to point out that Sam's been warned twice now. Sam says, "You know, my brother was right about you. You are dicks." Oh Sam, Castiel isn't a dick. He just has Angelpergers. A shadow falls across Sam. We hear the flapping of wings, and Sam's hair is blown back. Uriel is now right in front of him. Uriel warns him that as soon as Sam stops being useful, he will turn him to dust. "As for your brother, tell him maybe he should climb off that high horse of his. Ask Dean what he remembers from Hell." Sam's eyes double in size. We hear the flapping of wings, and Uriel is no longer in the room. Sam looks around, in shock.

Meanwhile, in a sunny park, Dean takes in the beautiful day, and watches the children play (oh look -- I made a rhyme). Castiel appears on the next bench over. Dean thinks Castiel is there to say "I told you so," but he's not and he's not there to judge Dean. He says, "Our orders were not to stop the summoning of Sam Hain; they were to do whatever you told us to do." It was a test of Dean -- to see how he would perform under "battlefield conditions." Dean says, "It was a witch, not the Tet Offensive." Castiel laughs. Oh my word, he got a joke! Yay, Cas! Dean thinks he failed the test, but he doesn't care. "If you were to wave that magic time-traveling wand of yours and we had to do it all over again, I'd make the same call. 'Cause see, I don't know what's going to happen when these seals are broken. Hell, I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow. What I do know is, this -- here," he gestures to the scenery that surrounds them. "...These kids, the swings, the trees -- all of it is still here because of my brother and me." Castiel tells Dean he misunderstands him. "I'm not like you think. I was praying you would choose to save the town." Dean says, "You were?" Castiel says, "These people -- they're all my Father's creations. They're works of art, and yet, even though you stopped Sam Hain, the seal was broken and we are one step closer to Hell on earth for all creation, and that's not an expression, Dean. It's literal. You, of all people, should appreciate what that means." Castiel wants to tell Dean something, but first makes him promise not to tell another soul. "I'm not a hammer, as you say. I have questions. I... I have doubts. I don't know what is right and what is wrong, anymore -- whether you passed or failed, here. But, in the coming months, you will have more decisions to make. I don't envy the weight that's on your shoulders, Dean. I truly don't." They stare at one another, but not in a fan fic way. Dean looks off to the playground before him then back to Castiel, but Castiel is gone. And we're all out of show, but that doesn't mean I'm all out of things to say. Oh no, not me.
