Sam has a boring scene with Ms. Alcott, so let me sum it up for you: Sarah went out with Chester Lew just that one time, but Mary seemed a bit jealous and couldn't let it go. This is all just a way to segue into Sam having a flashback about Amelia. They're in her motel room, their clothes strewn about the floor. An empty whiskey bottle and two glasses sit on the table. Amelia lies draped across Sam in bed. "It's been a long time since I let myself go like that," she says without much enthusiasm. "Yeah, I know what you mean," he says with equal passion. Neither of them is particularly sweaty or disheveled and Sam, at least, is still wearing his T-shirt. Amelia, with her head on Sam's chest, decides this is the perfect time to bring up her husband who died in Afghanistan eight months earlier. "We were together forever," she says. "Then one day, Don just enlists." As if we couldn't tell from the whole good soldier suddenly dying similarity, they went and gave the dead husband a name that even kind of sounds like Dean's. It's like with Andrea being like Amelia in order to drive home the point that Benny is Dean's new brother analog. Except... it means that Dean was drawn to someone who would be like his brother and Sam was drawn to someone who would be like himself. Anyway, Amelia says everyone looked at her with judgment and pity so she more or less ran away to start a new life.

Back in the present day, Dean and Garth are holed up in a motel room somewhere, doing their research. When Garth reaches for a beer, Dean stops him. "The last time you drank a beer, I had to pick you up off the floor." Garth chuckles. "You're such an idjit," he says affectionately. Dean takes issue with Bobby's favorite insult being used as a term of endearment. Garth's feelings aren't hurt, because he thinks Dean's real problem is whatever tension he's got going with Sam. Dean doesn't want to talk about it, even though Garth offers to hear him out. "I know sometimes Bobby, he would -- " Dean cuts him off. "You're not Bobby! Okay? You're never gonna be Bobby, so stop!" Now Garth looks like he wants to cry. "Bobby belonged to all of us, Dean," he says. "Not just you and Sam." Dean softens his tone and suggests they get back to work.

Dean discovers that Sussex was a failed business and Jeff was Scott's partner. Sam calls to tell them what he learned from Sarah Alcott. Dean sums up the plot thus far: "So, Mary's got a grudge against Sarah and Scott has a grudge against Jeff." At the same time, Garth has just found an entry in one of Bobby's notebooks that says green goo = specter. Bobby, by the way, had very nice handwriting. Garth reads aloud: "A specter is an avenging ghost. It possesses you and finds out whatever betrayals you're feeling and forces you to act on them." At this point in the episode, did anyone not see exactly where this was going? Bobby's notes go on to say that the last specter he encountered was after someone desecrated a grave. This leads Garth on an internet search, where he discovers that a grave was vandalized in Kearney three days earlier. "Oh, this could get awkward," he says when he reads just whose grave it was.
