Commercials. Nighttime. Dean traces designs in the dirt and explains that they are "Anasazi symbols. It's for protection. The Wen-DEE-go can't cross over them." Roy laughs, and Dean snaps, "Nobody likes a skeptic, Roy." Which, way to cover your own predictable tracks, writers. Sam takes a break from his rain dance to check on Sam. "You're like a powder keg, man, it's not like you. I'm supposed to be the belligerent one, remember?" Sam is sad that their Dad isn't there, and little does he know, but he'll be stuck on this same exact issue seven episodes later: "I mean why are we still even here?" Dean pulls out the Daddy Diary and says, "This is why. This book. This is Dad's single most valuable possession, everything he knows about every evil thing is in here. And he's passed it on to us. I think he wants us to pick up where he left off. You know, saving people." How about showing a little mercy to the recapper and calling it quits here at minute 36? Sam agrees with me: "That makes no sense. Why doesn't he call us? Tell us where he is?" Dean doesn't know the answer to that, because there is no answer to that. Sam tears up: "Dean, no. I gotta find Dad. I gotta find Jessica's killer." Dean does some triage and tells Sam that they will find those things, but that he has to prepare himself: "This search could take a while. And all that anger? You can't keep it burning for the long haul." Aww, with the comforting life-as-a-road-trip analogies. Sam asks Dean how he and their father do it, and Dean says he does it for the children. Pretty much that's actually what he says. He's like a Shriner in that way. And then it gets even better. After we get a shot of Hailey warming her sticks of beef jerky by the fire, we cut back to Jensen Ackles delivering a mind-blowingly bad line: "I'll tell you what else helps. Killing as many evil sons-a-bitches as I can." He does so with such verve, such panache, such shoving his lips forward to connote toughness, that I nearly stand up and clap. I said "nearly."The yelling for help starts again. They all look out into the forest and Dean tells everyone to just stay put. Roy snarks, "Inside the magic circle?" Heh. More yelling and glaargling, more growling and circling around them. Roy starts shooting into the forest, and when he hears a yelp, he thinks he hit whatever it is and goes running into the forest. Deadski. Dean and Sam go after him. We get a shot of Roy pausing when he hears a voice yell, "It's over here," just as a pair of skinny, charred-looking arms descends from above, grabs either side of his head, and snaps his neck like one of Hailey's twig legs. Like I said: deadski.
