Back in Winnetka, Roger's cleaning and repairing some intricate clockwork machinery. Janet comes over and observes that he appears to have recovered and says, "You know, if we get on the road right now, there's still time to salvage the weekend." Roger says he's happy right where he is. Janet asks, "What's going on? You've been acting peculiar ever since Bruce and Susan's housewarming." Roger dodges with, "Maybe I'm just tired of spending all our free time with them, you know? What do the four of us have in common anyway? ... They were our neighbors. They lived across the street from us." Janet protests, "Susan is more than just a neighbor! I know things have changed, but if we go up there and we do all the things we've always done, then maybe ... maybe things can change back."
