Back at the Detour, the Bransens are bailing away, merrily, merrily. The Paolos, meanwhile, finally get the Detour clue and choose Bailing. They'd better hurry up, because Wally and the Tonyas are finished emptying their boat, and are receiving the pit stop clue. They leave. The Paolos, interestingly, aren't as far behind as they could be, because they do pass the Bransens as the Bransens are leaving and the Paolos are arriving at the Bailing area. The Tonyas correctly note that their goal right now needs to be not screwing up. Seriously.
Paolos, time to bail. As soon as they're bailing, DJ starts yelling at Mama, and she says, "Don't be yellin' at me, I'll take your frickin' head off." DJ answers, "Ma, this is a big river. I can drown you here and no one would find your body." "Just try, buddy," she says. That made me laugh a little, I admit, even though it's awful -- probably in part because it reminds me of Dan Hedaya saying, "I've got a .45 and a shovel. I doubt anyone would miss you." Which is one of my favorite movie lines ever. That and, of course, "GET HIM A BODY BAG! YEEEEAH!" Which is also kind of apropos. I wonder if there's anything troubling to be taken from the fact that my favorite movie lines are about disposing of bodies. Nah, probably not.
The Bransens head for Lake Powell.
Mama wants to drag the boat, but DJ and Tony insist it's still too heavy to drag. When she mutters that she gives up, DJ flips out and orders her to go away if she's going to give up. He's basically losing his shit, knowing that they're probably out. When she brings up flipping the boat, he loses it some more, hollering that they've already tried flipping it and they can't. Of course, flipping it would get progressively easier as you took more water out, so it's not like that's something you'd only try once, no?
After another set of commercials, we return to find the Paolos still bickering. Finally, they get the boat empty enough to pull, and they drag it across the line and earn their pit stop clue. On the way back, Brian says, "I don't want to be eliminated; I really don't."
The Linzes are the first to arrive at Antelope Point, and they excitedly run down looking for marked boats. They didn't read the clue quite carefully enough, however, so they missed the part where it was a marked path to the boats, not just marked boats. So they have to double back and take a circuitous route to the little motorboats that await. One of them is already rehearsing. "'Linz Family, you're team number one!' 'You're damn right we are, Phil!'" I think they definitely smell the victory, and who can blame them? On the other hand...yeah, you never want to invite disaster like that. Finally, they do get headed in the right direction. The pinks are just behind them.
