"PS, buddy," Sean says, thinking about parents and their children, memories of a long-ago life. "Don't do drugs." Adam leans in with the pliers, still in disbelief that this is happening. "I don't want you fucking up my enamel. This smile gets me a lot of tail." Adam grins; Cathy took away his game and now this is the most fun he can have. Sean is not a game; Sean is the lobster only now beginning to see that this is the most fun Adam's had all day, leaning toward his uncle with pliers in his hand. It doesn't go well.
Sean screams, leaping into the air, dancing on the porch. Adam shrinks back, from his pain; he hates this part as much as his mother does. Sean runs away, into the sun:
"I begged your parents not to have you circumcised. Now I wish I'd done it myself!"
Dr. Miller's probable house is large, Scarlett O'Hara-sized; embarrassed, he explains himself. "I'm not gonna be single forever. And by my projections, I'm hoping to double the size of my practice in the next ten years..." She nods, twinkling. "The house that cancer built. Your own little mela-homa." He scrunches up his nose at her.
The realtor Vivian loves the car; Cathy Jamison can't quite explain it. "It's... it's new. It's, uh... It's a convertible. Obviously," she adds, quieted back against him. She introduces herself as Amanda Montgomery, and they are invited in. They are a couple, now, Dr. Todd Miller whose practice will double in ten years and Amanda Montgomery, creating herself as she goes.
"I'm a young doctor's girlfriend!" she whispers, overjoyed; Dr. Miller smiles nervously.
The realtor explains the house's facts, and asks if they are planning on kids. Amanda Montgomery, possibly Montgomery-Miller, wants lots of kids. The closets are big, which Amanda loves. "Todd's always saying to me my closets need closets!" Weakly, getting stronger, getting into it, Todd agrees.
They tromp through the house, looking at the curtains, looking out over the saltwater pool, smiling at the dining room, pretending. When the realtor asks what kind of practice Todd Miller has, Amanda knows the answers. She knows Cathy's doctor very well.
"He's an oncologist. Summa cum laude, University of Michigan." Todd's surprised, touched, a little bit used to Amanda now. She grins at him and whispers. "Saw your diploma in your office. I also saw that picture of you and your fraternity brothers. It's a little Gay Men's Chorus," she smiles. Fruity, if you're into fruity.
