Paul punches him, hard, right in the spot Sean was pointing at; he never even noticed that Sean was pointing there and yet here he is, fist balled up, sweating and wild-eyed, hauling off at a hobo; knocking out his infected tooth. Sean nearly cries with relief, and tries to embrace him; Paul, confused, still thinks their fight was real. The truth comes out, leaving him with an ache where something used to be. How much of it was true? How much is straight from Cathy's mouth? It's every nightmare coming true.

"I've had this infected tooth. I've been trying like a motherfucker to get it out, but the universe was fighting me on it. But you, you just got it for me, buddy. Thanks!"

But the damage is done. Paul feels something break inside. Rugby Slut watches from the sidelines, like it's a television show, like it's a fish tank, like it's a little glass world.

"No hard feelings," Sean says, backing away. "You should know I didn't mean, uh, 68% of the stuff I just said. You know, I think I swallowed it. When it passes, I am making you an awesome tooth necklace." Paulie! Paulie! Paulie! Paulie! They group joins in and Sean runs away. "Paulie! Paulie!"

Back at Cap'n Red's, in the parking lot, stalling until she has to try and drive the thing again. Apologizing for the trick with the pool, wearing Dr. Miller's jacket, hair drying. She tells him he's lucky, even as she's turning back into Cathy Jamison. Lucky, to be looking for houses, strong windows, salt water; lucky to be starting a new life. She hates to be maudlin. "I always get maudlin when I'm coming off a drunk." He doesn't mind. Her suffering doesn't delight him, it validates his own.

He's never looked so young. His voice breaks, like a boy. He apologizes, but can't really say for what. "I just... I feel bad." She begs him not to; she doesn't want his pity, she wants his complicity. "I had a great day!" He's guilty, for a moment, that his future will be longer than hers. She shakes her head, feeling stronger than she has all day.

"I do have a future. His name's Adam. Unfortunately, he's an asshole right now. I'm banking on it being a phase. I think it's a phase."
