And with that it's race day! Everyone gets ready to run in their various venues, most of which are indoor tracks. Their families come to support them and, in some cases, run with them. Mandi is going to participate in the half-marathon with Aubrey, which Aubrey thinks will be a help to her. Filipe and Sione are together, too, but Sione is a faster runner and takes off. There's a lot of motivational pep talking going on, and some fretting about cookies, and reflections about how far everyone has come, and lots of cheers and an inspirational song. Everyone is determined to finish, and Mike says he'll do so no matter if he has to walk or crawl. After 8 miles, Helen seems like she might have a heart attack. Mike starts walking after 5 miles because he's getting some cramps. Ditto with Laura. Shouldn't these guys, like, train specifically for marathoning? Tara and Sione seem like they're in pretty good shape, but lots of the others are having hard physical times. In his last mile, Sione gets a big-ass cramp right before the finish line. It's so painful that he can't even take another step. He lays on the ground and screams. Filipe thinks he might have kicked ye olde bucket. This allows Tara, who was lagging behind him a bit, to gain some ground. But with Filipe's help, Sione gets up and pushes to the finish line. Tara finishes at 2:24:19, while Sione clocks in at 2:25:57. Crazy! We'll see if that was a $10,000 cramp or not.
Tara emotionally interviews that, at 200 pounds, she ran a half-marathon, adding, "Who knew?" Cheryl, Tara's mom, is completely impressed that nothing stops Tara. Sione also feels awesome. Helen is not far behind Sione and Tara, crossing the finish line at 2:49:19. She gloats that at 48 she just ran a half-marathon. I have to say, it's quite possible that I underestimated Helen. Aubrey finishes next, and says that crossing the finish line was the best accomplishment she's ever felt. Her final time is 2:53:02. These cookies really may come into play, eh? Mandi is happy to have been able to have this last hurrah with Aubrey. Cathy finishes at 3:15:21, which is also pretty impressive. She's amazed at how far she's come in 10 weeks. Mike finishes at 3:19:38, and Laura comes in at 3:24:00. Filipe finishes his finish line with his wife by his side at 3:24:05. Kristin finishes at 3:43:45, and Ron completes four miles in 1:52:34. He says he knew he couldn't go for 13 miles, but he thinks he did pretty well and set a personal record. Tara hopes that nobody ate the cookies, in service of letting the best person win. Yeah, that's some pretty wishful endorphin-fueled thinking. Sorry, Tara!
