For instance, all his homemade electronic devices seem to be working perfectly. One and only one of his poisoning victims survived, allowing him to use her to draw Ralph Gedman into his trap. One of Gus's text-buddies changed her phone number and Tate was able to take over the old one without Gus getting wise until almost too late. Tate was able to land a job working closely with Ruiz's wife, who kicked Ruiz out of the house at the exact perfect time for him to make his move. Nobody interrupted his killing of Santiago Sol, Jr. in a public bathroom, and the only witness to his killing of Peter Meadows fell to his knife before she could give him away. He figured out that Cross read his license plate even though he didn't seem to know she was conscious after the crash. And now he's just cruising around El Paso like he's doing errands despite the fact that he's probably the most wanted man in Texas since General Santa Anna. In fact, it seems to me like everything's coming up Tate right now.
But Ruiz agrees to meet him, and asks where. Tate asks where Ruiz is now, probably hoping the answer is "five feet below ground level next to a tree at the cemetery." At a nod from Cross, Ruiz says, "At your uncle's house." Tate processes that for a moment before saying, "You actually remembered something I told you about myself." Well, sort of. Ruiz adds that they found the freezer. "We?" Tate asks, and Ruiz says Cross is with him. Tate asks how she is. "Probably pretty pale." As usual.
"I've been meaning to ask her how she enjoyed getting to know Jack Childress. That man has some batshit theories on the border, doesn't he?" Yes he does, but at least those batshit theories hinted that this show might end up saying something interesting about said border, and I think that's probably gone by the boards. Also, what does Tate have against Cross, anyway? It's not like she's ever made Ruiz's life any easier. Ruiz gets us all back on topic, asking again where they're going to meet. Tate instructs Ruiz to get in his car and wait for his next call in sixty seconds with directions…and to leave Cross behind. Ruiz agrees and hangs up. Cross not only protests Ruiz going alone, she refuses to let Ruiz borrow her gun, saying he could end up in prison if he kills Tate. Ruiz begs until Cross hands it over, which is such a breach of protocol I don't understand why her head doesn't explode. He also asks her not to tell anyone where he went. "I can't lie to Hank," Cross says. Ruiz says it's easy. Well, not for everyone, Ruiz. "Do it for me, all right?" His phone is already ringing again, so he answers it and runs to his car. Hey, hang up and drive, Ruiz.
