Peter. He hangs his head. His wife and daughter come. First time Daughter is going to see him fight. She cries. Yeah, maybe this should be a clue that it's a bad idea. "Bye, Daddy!" she says, then adds, "I love you. Give me a kiss and a hug," and runs back. Wow. So jinxed.
Alfonso tells his family that after this he's either going to look like a hero or an idiot. They laugh. HoskinsDad says he'll have no problem. Mom tells him to think positive. He talks about what great motivation they give him, then when they leave, he starts shadow boxing and says, "Wheee. Someone's in trouble!" With his shirt off, Alfonso is very un-cut. Seriously. He makes Ralph Macchio look beefy.
The Heartbeat of We've Run Out Of Stock Music For The Moment plays. Intercut between Peter and Alfonso bobbing and weaving in their mirrors. Then Alfonso gets his hands taped. Then Peter. "Just fight your balls off," says Tommy. "30 minutes to fight," says a graphic. More preparation. Peter listens to his iPod. "Manfredo-Time, baby!" he yells. More preparation. Peter is jawing.
Outside. The crowd arrives. There's James Caan. There's Melanie Griffith, looking like she was on the wrong side of a few left hooks herself. There's Chuck Norris. There's Alfonso's parents. Aw. Bring back the celebrities! Normal people are boring! More Peter sparring. More Alfonso sparring. Crowd. Crowd. Sly.
Ring. They couldn't afford ring man Michael Buffer, so some other dude announces the fight. Peter slo-mos down the hall. Peter voice-overs that this is the shot of a lifetime. Overhead shot of ring -- the sponsors likey! Toyota! Sierra Mist! Foot Locker! The Home Depot! Gatorade! Fake Buffer announces Peter. Cheering. Music. Everyone stands. Wife and Daughter cheer.
Alfonso now. Hallway. Passion. Dream. "I will become The Contender." He is announced. Jesse cheers. There's Jackie, looking crazy, having contributed nothing to the show whatsoever. Boston kid happy he didn't get picked. Senor Hoskins. And now they meet in the ring. Touching gloves. Taking corners. Their various corner men mumble encouragement. And Round One!
