One of the cops who was in charge of keeping Claire safe is defending herself, saying the windows were padlocked (Raines had a key that Emma gave him) and he hid under one of the AC units that they didn't know about (but Emma told him about it -- come on, it's an air conditioner on a huge suburban house. Those suckers aren't small). She says there's nothing they could've done (except, you know, move Claire out of that house once you knew that the woman who'd been living with her was one of Carroll's accomplices?) and Mike gets all shouty and peevish. Which looks very cute on him.
Marshal Turner yells for everyone who isn't a federal agent to get out of the house. Parker goes looking for Claire and Ryan, and finds them huddled in Joey's room, holding hands. She tells Ryan that Raines is in surgery, and they'll question him as soon as he's conscious. Ryan says he wants to see Carroll, and Parker asks, "So you can break his other hand?" Why not? And why haven't they just gone ahead and executed this motherfucker like they were supposed to?
Ryan asks Carroll how his hand is. Carroll counters with that timelessly catty observation that Ryan looks tired. He's also requested some books, and I'd think that whatever he asks for at this point the feds would be like, sure, okay, you get gruel and polyester sheets, dude. Ryan says that Claire almost died, and Carroll is almost funny when he says, "Yeah... but she didn't." He says Ryan's heroism in saving Claire is all part of his story. They spar some more and Carroll says Raines was just a puppy (poor choice of words there, man) compared to some of what he's planned. Ryan asks why Carroll is doing this, and he says it's for the challenge. Also because he's a psychotic maniac? Just a hunch.
Ryan asks how long Carroll thinks he can keep up his little game, and asks what the end is. Carroll is offended that Ryan wants to spoil the mystery for himself. He asks how it feels, saving the day, how it felt to kill Raines. I really want Ryan to break something else on Carroll. That would be a nice ending to every episode: The boys do their best Alec Baldwin gravelly-voice impressions, and then Ryan breaks one of Carroll's bones. One of the little ones in his ear, or maybe his kneecap. That would be satisfying.
