Emma stalks off to refill her drink, but Roderick follows and explains how his family is big into public service and that conflict is what drew him to Carroll. "Joe speaks to my contradictions," he says. He starts in on the nature of gray areas and brings up how much Carroll loves Claire, and also how Carroll slept with Emma. And also there's Jacob, and Paul, all these gray areas, Roderick chuckles. He asks if she even cares about Jacob anymore and Emma snaps that she does care, she loves him. He says her phone is full of messages from Jacob and starts a spot-on impression of Jacob shrieking, "Why'd you leave us? I love you, Emma! Please call me." Emma stares at him, looking like she's about to cry or lunge for a sharp object. Maybe both.
Donovan brainstorms that Carroll's made two attempts to get Claire and now he's escalated to public statements. Ryan fills him in on his theory that Carroll is trying to lure Claire out of protective custody. Parker tells them that Richmond Claire 5.0 is a student, and her roommate says she's at an off-campus festival and left her cell phone at home. That's convenient.
Paul's dying. Jacob checks his email and laughs happily -- Roderick sent him an address where they can meet him. Paul's all, that's terrific, but before you go, could you get me a quart of AB negative and a Z-pack? Jacob's mother tells her now jubilant son that his father will be there in five minutes and he needs to leave. Jacob tries to get Paul off the couch, but Paul tells him to go without him. Jacob refuses to leave him, but Paul says, "You owe me."
Flashback. Jacob is freaking out about the murder Paul just committed and Paul hugs him reassuringly. Jacob says Emma will hate him for this terrible flaw he has -- this inability to commit cold-blooded homicide and Paul says they won't tell Emma. He says he likes Jacob, and plus now Jacob owes him.
So this is what he's calling his marker in on. Paul tells Jacob he wants his life to mean something, and I guess that he thinks "something" is delivering Sarah Fuller to have her eyes cut out and kidnapping Joey Matthews. Great. So meaningful. Or maybe he's referring to his great not-gay love for Jacob, who cries as Paul tells him he loves him and then Jacob puts a pillow over Paul's face and smothers him, weeping. Paul fights a little, and then dies really quickly. Jacob kisses his forehead.
Donovan, Parker and Ryan, along with a squadron of FBI agents, look for Claire 5.0 at what looks like small-time Mardi Gras. Everyone is wearing masks, because we wouldn't want to make this too easy. A guy who introduces himself as Steve finds her first; Claire takes off her mask and he leads her away by the hand. Ryan spots Louise and gives chase.
