Previously on The Following: Everyone was terrible at their jobs, except maybe Emma.
Joey wakes up at the cult house, and his father is sitting in a chair in the corner, watching him sleep, which understandably freaks the kid out. Carroll tells his son that he knows he's scared of him, but he hopes Joey will give him another chance. Dude, he has never met you. Carroll explains that Claire was meant to be there, and Joey is giving him an incredible WTF face while Carroll rambles some more about how he's really a cool and fun guy, no, seriously! Run, kid. RUN.
Carroll leaves the room and tells Emma Joey isn't talking to him. I don't know why anyone is surprised. She tells him everyone is waiting for him -- maybe they'd like in-person demonstrations of the best way to sever all those wee muscles in the eyeball? In the foyer downstairs, a big group of followers has assembled, just staring up at Carroll like pod people.
At the prison, a news lady is reminding us about David's existence. Ryan goes into a briefing, where an FBI agent is hollering about what a nightmare this is for the bureau, what with Carroll now having escaped TWICE. No kidding. Y'all should try, um, not letting the charismatic serial killers run the place. Parker exposits that new guy is named Nick Donovan, and he was sent by the director of the FBI personally. Ryan observes that Quantico is freaking out, as if there's any reason they shouldn't be freaking out. He asks about Claire, asks if she's safe, and Parker says she doesn't know anything since Claire's in protective custody (I figured that meant the U.S. marshals took over her security, but as we'll see later, it's a different division of the FBI. Great. So she'll be dead in like twenty minutes). Ryan wants to question David, but Donovan pops up and says the whole torturing-people-for-information thing is kind of a no-no on his watch.
Donovan asks if they know anything about who David is, but they got no hits from his prints. Ryan wants to question him to find out about Roderick, but Donovan reminds Ryan that he's a consultant, not an agent, and needs to start acting that way. Parker gets all het up and hollers about how Ryan and Carroll are doing their Danse Macabre or whatever the fuck, but Ryan seems to take it really well and says he'll be in the other room..."consulting."
Ryan goes to the room where Mike and the tech lady are, and whines about how nobody likes him. Mike points out placidly that he's "inconsistent and extreme -- nobody knows how to respond to you." Also drunk, aggressive, completely careless of the Constitution, and also sometimes it looks like you smell. Ryan tells Mike he was joking, reminding everyone that this show doesn't know the definition of a joke. Ryan tells Mike he wants to question David, but apparently Donovan insists on doing it personally.
