There Goes the Neighborhood

Back at Claire's house, she's furiously scrubbing blood from her hands and mouth in her steaming hot shower. She slides slowly to the floor, clutching a stained towel, tears filling her eyes. Some time later, she's sitting on the edge of her bed, the curtains drawn against sunny windows. She liberally applies sunscreen to her arms, legs, and face, missing a patch on her knee in her haste. She gets up, crosses a stray beam of sunlight and is immediately burned where she failed to lotion up properly. She cries out, limps back to bed, and applies sunscreen to her burned knee. Man, she must go through gallons of that stuff.

Nick's kids arrive at Gates Academy for their first day of school. The little girl quickly leaves the scene, since she doesn't have a subplot in this episode. The teen boy gets a passing but friendly greeting from a pretty girl with long curly hair. Nick, meanwhile, is arriving at the police station for his first day of work. He's greeted inside by two fresh-faced officers, Marcus and Leigh. They chitchat a bit and we learn that the former Chief of Police retired to Mexico. Nick also gets a look at the mega security and surveillance system they have set up, from hundreds of cameras to "pressure-triggered" sensors around the perimeter. "Crime must be non-existent here," Nick remarks. "Almost," Leigh says. Turns out they lost picture from three of their cameras yesterday. Marcus shows Nick video footage of the contractor wrecking his car. Leigh tries to play it off like no biggie, but kiss-up Marcus happily informs Nick that the man was seen walking into the Radcliff house but the camera went down after that. Furthermore, there's no record of his truck leaving The Gates. Nick wants him tracked down.
