True South

Is there even such a thing as a True South? If you're Alicia by virtue of not being Colin; if you're Alicia by virtue of not being Celeste; if you grew up Alicia by virtue of not being Owen. If you were the good daughter and the good student and the good wife, that meant you'd have to be the Martha, wouldn't it? Inside? Naturally, permanently, a priori good. That's the story. That's the story of the Good Wife. Take that away, you get throttled by existentialism before you can blink.

If you define yourself by what you're not, by what you're pushing against, then where the hell are you supposed to stand when they take that away? What happened to the Good Wife when she got divorced? Or when she stopped asking, and started taking? When you're suddenly a Caitlin -- when you're not a wife, and you were never really good -- you could unravel yourself completely: No story at all. Take away your north and south, and the dial just goes spinning.
