Doctor: "Tell me about the Spooky Tree case that dismantled your entire mind last time."
Linden: "That's clearly in my file."
Doctor: "For the viewers at home, work with me."
Linden: "Detectives sometimes neglect themselves, all right?"
Doctor: "Regi brought you in here last time, after you scared the shit out of Jack -- who was ten -- because you took to your bed. Sorry, but that sounds mental. Tell me about this drawing."

And she... Does! Okay, so there's the Secret Origin of Sarah Linden. There was a hooker who was murdered in her apartment. When they got there, they had to break down the door because her six-year-old son Adrian -- who'd been in there for like a week, hiding, waiting for somebody to come -- couldn't reach the chain. Sarah took Adrian into the kitchen, and he drew the spooky tree picture over and over and over. I see the connection to her own childhood, and her need to protect Jack feeding into the obsession too, but the tree part is still waiting to connect up.

Doctor: "I guess you see some bad shit. The kind of shit that will make you crazy."
Linden: "And I'm guessing the same of you. You seem to manage, right?"
Doctor: "Okay, sure. But this picture. Some trees, a hill. Winter. That's nice, right?"
Linden: "He drew it, over and over, while his mother was rotting in another room. It's not so much the content that disturbs me."
Doctor: "And Adrian?"
Linden: "In the system. Listen, that whole thing where you offered me a cigarette? That was a rookie move. I guess that's why your career is going so shitty."

She smiles again. Uglier than anything.

RICHMOND HQ

Jamie kicks everybody out for some reason, and then finds one of those cufflinks with the Mayoral seal on it, just sitting on the carpet, like you do. Observant, my Jamie, but also closer to the floor than most. Well, less than Darren these days. Anyway, he asks somebody, a Patty, who closed the office last night. I don't know about you, but my money is on "Somebody evil."

ON THE WATERFRONT

A rosy-cheeked ginger cop tells Holder that the arrest he made on the construction site 5/10 was a henchman of Mobster Janek's, a Joseph Nowack, whom they had to cut loose once Michael Ames called in to say that he was an employee and not, in fact, lurking.
