Things She Said

Jack approaches Rebecca and Ariel in the conference room. He says that the board is giving Rebecca a vote of confidence and releasing a statement of support. Rebecca grins and thanks him. Jack asks why she chose him as her lawyer. Rebecca heard that Jack was "the most principled lawyer in this building." Jack thanks her. Rebecca adds that, working there, it's only a matter of time before he won't be. Jack walks off. Ariel starts packing up her things. Rebecca says she knows Ariel is sleeping with someone in the firm, and asks if it's Jack. Ariel plays dumb, and then says it's not true. Rebecca tells her to be careful, and then puts her hand on top of Ariel's and meaningfully says that Ariel should call if she ever wants to talk about it. Jack chooses that moment to look back and sees Rebecca and Ariel basically holding hands. And pops a boner.

Riley knocks on Fenderson's parents' door. He introduces himself as a college buddy of Fenderson's, and Pa Fenderson invites him in. Riley turns him down. Fenderson's daughter, about twelve years old, appears in the background. Riley hands Pa an envelope and says that some college buddies took up a collection to put toward Daughter Fenderson's tuition. Riley offers his condolences and starts to leave. Daughter speaks and asks what her father was like in college. Pa says that, for the last few years of Fenderson's life, there wasn't much to remember. Riley says that Fenderson was "an original," who "had kind of a wacky take on life but a lot of friends." He loved engineering and structure, which made him a good chess player. Riley continues to say nice things about Fenderson. So did he suddenly remember or is he just making it all up to make the little girl feel better? Riley starts to leave again, but then runs back and hands them Gary Hartzog's business card. Riley strongly urges them to call him, and then leaves for real this time.
