Anderson says that he's not going to announce the name of the person they all want executed, but he will announce who they all want to stay in the game, because that person will play a big part in the next test. That person is Steven, who has to follow Anderson to get his instructions. Anderson tells Steven that he has to convince his fellow players to do tasks that are very risky, or appear to be very risky. The test is worth $60,000, and if all three players complete their tasks, Steven gets an exemption from the next quiz. Wow, an exemption this late in the game is a huge deal. Anderson voice-overs that an exemption would mean that Steven would automatically make it to the final round. Anderson tells Steven the three tasks. One player will be blindfolded and placed against a board while a professional knife-thrower throws knives at him or her. One player will have to be blindfolded and walk over hot coals. One player will be blindfolded and have to walk a plank over a hundred-foot ravine. The words "over a hundred foot ravine" were totally dubbed in after the fact, and I have no idea why, or why they couldn't make it less obvious that it was dubbed. Steven has to decide first which players will do which tasks.
Anderson voice-overs that the players were told how important the test is. The players take turns explaining the rules. Steven will ask them each to do something. If all three do it, they earn $60,000 and an exemption for Steve. If only two complete their tasks, they still earn the money, but no exemption for Steve. If one completes the task, they earn no money, but that player gets an exemption. If none of them do the task, they get no money, but Steve gets the exemption. Wow. That's complicated, but genius.
Steven decides that Kathryn will do the knife-throw, Jim will do the hot coals, and Charlie will do the plank. We see the professional knife-thrower doing his thing. He's throwing little axes, not knives, but the show keeps referring to them as knives so I'll go with that. Kathryn stands nearby, blind-folded, and Steven reminds her about a story she told about a former teacher. Kathryn realizes that she hears knives being thrown, and announces that she can't do it. Steven tries to calm her down, and explains that only one knife has to be thrown. Kathryn wants to see it first, but Steven explains that she can't. Kathryn wants to know what the other tasks are. Steven can't tell her. Charlie and Jim sit and wait, and Charlie says that he thinks his task will be "on the brink of death [sic]." Kathryn is really mad that Steven picked her for this task. She tells him that she only put him last on her list because she thought he was The Mole. Steven tells her that she was last on his list, which is probably a lie, because it was probably Jim. Steven gets Kathryn up against the board. Kathryn asks for a second to think about it. Steven tells her again that she was chosen specifically for this task. Kathryn crumples to the ground. Anderson looks alarmed and rushes over because he loves her. Steven doesn't look upset at all that Kathryn has collapsed, and asks if he should pick her up. We go to break, not knowing what the hell just happened. Oh, the suspense! I'm kind of pissed that the previews made it look like Kathryn fell off a roof of something, but her fainting spell was awfully convenient, no?
