Brother's Keeper

Lizzie is standing outside Randall's room, arguing with a nurse. Jeremy walks up and asks what's going on. A visibly upset Lizzie says that Randall needs a new liver and he's being "noncompliant." Jeremy wonders what the big deal is, and Lizzie explains that she needs to face him because she doesn't want him to die without her having the chance to talk to him, or tell him off, or slap him across the face, or something. I don't know. Jeremy points out that the last time she tried to talk to Randall, she almost had a miscarriage. Lizzie says that she's angry, and she needs an outlet. She might try a punching bag, or scream therapy. I don't think Randall is going to respond the way that she needs him to in order to heal.

Nick is at a crime scene, explaining his theory of what happened to the ME. Another detective says that neighbors heard the son fighting with his parents, who were both ill and required a lot of attention. They're looking for the son now. Nick's phone rings, and it's Jeremy, reporting that Randall might die. Except he uses code words like "the patient you were interested in." Nick assures Jeremy that everyone in the department has moved on, so it doesn't matter so much if Randall dies now. He tells Jeremy to hold tight and promises to report back if there's a problem.

Kathryn and Ed have breakfast, and she apologizes for pushing him away earlier. Ed assures her that it's no big deal, and he can wait for her to be ready. He suggests going away next weekend, somewhere that she likes. Kathryn seems touched.

Egan's wife, Mary, asks him if he's in a trance. Egan snaps out of it, and reminds her that he's taking out a friend for his bachelor party. He muses that his friend is happy, and in love. And then he blurts out, "We're not happy, Mary." Mary looks shocked, and tries to blame the whole thing on Egan still being on an adrenaline rush. Egan orders his wife, "Mary, I want you to look me in the eye. Tell me the last time you were happy. Tell me the last time your life was what you wanted it to be." Mary just looks down.

Franny listens to a message on her answering machine, where Ricky's father, Carlos, says that he knows she got money from Ricky's fund, and he thinks that he deserves some of it for being Ricky's father. Franny calls Nick and says that she needs to talk to him about Carlos. She explains that he keeps calling and demanding money, and has threatened to take custody of Ricky if she doesn't pay him. How is he going to get custody when he's in prison? I'm not saying Franny is the most responsible person in the world, but she's, you know, not locked up. Maybe Carlos has family on the outside that would take Ricky or something. Nick seems annoyed and asks Franny whether she's talked to Kathryn. I think Nick is getting a little tired of being everyone's designated problem solver. Franny says nothing, so Nick says he'll see her at the diner later and hangs up. He runs over and catches up with the ME to ask if everything is still okay about withholding the cause of Randall's heart attack. The ME says that his own ass is on the line now, and he can't exactly go back and change his report.
