What's Your Emergency?

Nick calls Jeremy from the hospital. Apparently, Jeremy missed rounds that morning, and no one knows where he is. But wasn't he at the hospital earlier that day to treat Ricky? And talk to nurses? I mean, he's been seen at the hospital that day. Anyway, Nick really wants to talk to him. As Nick speaks, Randall is rolled into an elevator nearby.

Jeremy is sitting in his car. He calls Franny and asks how Ricky is doing. Franny says that Ricky is at her grandma's house. They are silent for a moment, and Franny asks whether he's all right. Jeremy doesn't answer.

Egan and his wife go out to dinner. Egan talks about how great it is to go out to dinner. His wife cuts to the chase and asks about the employment agency, and Egan says that he's going to hold out for something better. To her credit, his wife smiles a little bit. Egan takes this as the go sign to confess that he really wants kids, or at least one. His wife's smile fades as she reminds him that they can't have kids. Egan says that they tried once, a long time ago, and gave up when it didn't work right away. Egan thinks that they could get help. His wife looks upset and puts down her fork as Egan says it's not too late. Has he seen his wife? If Egan's talking about anything other than adoption, I'm thinking it might be too late. She looks to be in her mid-forties, unless they're going for that "old before her time" look. I'm guessing the baby ship has sailed.

Jeremy and Franny stand on top of her building and look out over the city. Franny relates how, because she doesn't have a college degree, doesn't have typing or computer skills, and refused to work in a bank again, there was nothing for her. She has four years' experience in a bank -- surely that has to qualify her for something, right? Anyway, the only job they had for her was lugging dirt, which she turned down. Jeremy stares into the distance and confesses, "I did things in there that I didn't see coming. And I've done things since...." Franny thinks he's talking about their boink session, but Jeremy says that's not it, and that it wasn't her fault anyway. Franny says that she just needed Jeremy that day, and after a while, Jeremy confesses that he needed her, too.
