Even the jury objects

The U.S. Attorney's Office. Rebecca heads into Theodore McNally's office. She is surprised to see The Special Agent there. The Assistant U.S. Attorney (McNally) introduces himself to her, and hands her habeas back to her. Rebecca is taken aback; she doesn't quite know what to make of the situation: "Did you file it?" McNally insists she can't file the habeas. "What do you mean I can't file it?" Blah classified information, blah top secret, blah cover-up, blah intrigue blah. Rebecca just wants to see her client. The two men exchange Secret Agent looks. They both take deep breaths. Apparently, Rebecca can see her client after she gets a national security clearance. What's involved in a national security clearance? Well, Rebecca has to give The Special Agent her home address, social security number, names of family members, and explain how she knows Mr. Habib. Rebecca is visibly frustrated; she half-yells, "I haven't even met him yet!" Upon her outburst, McNally throws up his arms and says, "Whoa!" Then he warns Rebecca that anything she says can and will be used against her or her client. Huh? The Melody Of Mysterious Circumstances rises to keep Rebecca company in her discomfort regarding this situation. McNally insists that the case involves national security. If she wants to defend Habib, she's got to go through the Attorney General. She's got to answer all of their questions. Anything they tell Rebecca is privileged. If she lies to them, well, that's perjury. In order to even speak to her client, she's got to get the clearance. Wow. It's a lot of work. Even for a lawyer used to a lot of work. This is beyond a lot of work. This is serious work. Okay, what if Rebecca doesn't want a security clearance? What if she objects because it's a violation of her rights? McNally leans back in his chair. Well, in that case, Habib gets no lawyer. It's that simple. Rebecca purses her lips, glares at McNally, cross-glares at The Special Agent, then takes her habeas from the desk and leaves.
