Suffering County Courthouse. Helen calls Mrs. Gosse to the stand. Eugene whispers, "Whatever happens, keep quiet and just sit there." Father Gosse tries to roll his eyes, but he's afraid Eugene might hit him really hard. Kelly testifies that the baby was crying a lot. "With the visits to Dr. Taylor's. The bills. Tom and I were falling apart." Helen asks how Father Gosse adjusted to his "new life." Kelly replies, "Not well. After losing his job, he always seemed to be on edge. He has a short temper anyway." Eugene objects. The judge sustains. Blah did your husband hit the baby; blah hurt her in anyway blah. No. But he did yell at her sometimes. Helen asks, "During this time, how were you and your husband getting along?" Mother Gosse responds, "We loved each other. But we had these fights, and once Tom was so upset that he said he wished we never had the baby." Blah he didn't mean it, blah but he said it anyway, blah it scared her blah. Helen wants to know what the baby's condition was the night before they went to the hospital. Well, she cried all night, and then quieted down at about four in the morning. Kelly didn't see her before she went to work the next morning. Which I think is strange. Rebecca makes a note on her legal pad. Helen asks, "When was the next time you saw her?" Kelly: "That night at the hospital."
Rebecca rolls out her cross-examination: "Mrs. Gosse. Your husband wasn't the only one falling apart, was he?" Kelly says things were hard on both of them. Blah postpartum blah. Helen objects. The judge lets Rebecca proceed. Rebecca: "You were so depressed you started drinking, didn't you." Of course, the mother is evil and an alcoholic. Yawn. Blah her drinking was never a problem blah. Rebecca: "You were reprimanded at work, you almost lost your job." Now, it's Kelly's turn to tear up; she hated her job, and when she got home there was even more work with the baby. Rebecca: "And that made you angry, didn't it. You fought with your husband because he was concerned you were losing control." Mother Gosse insists that she would never harm her child. Rebecca: "Mrs. Gosse, one week prior to the emergency, did you shake your baby outside the apartment in the hall?" What? Kelly is astounded. Rebecca continues -- blah juggling groceries, blah melodramatic music, blah baby was crying, blah the phone was ringing, blah had trouble with the door, blah the neighbours saw you blah. Kelly screams, "Absolutely not. That isn't true!" Helen objects somewhere in Rebecca's "question." Blah she was the last one to see the baby, blah the night she got sick, blah the baby was crying, blah she wasn't when Kelly came out blah. And she didn't even check on the baby! Kelly screams, "I would never, ever hurt my baby!" Now, no one really believes that, do we? Rebecca has nothing further. Judge Freeman bangs the gavel for a twenty-minute recess. Lindsay walks into the courtroom, "Eugene," she asks, "Are you still cross-examining Mrs. Gosse?" They just finished. "Well," she says, "you'll have to re-call a witness." Lindsay hands her co-worker a file. It looks very interesting. [Sniff sniff.] Hey, what? Is something burning? Do we all smell a plot twist?
