I'm trying a new approach for this recaplet: it's in the live-blog style -- except I don't have publishing access and Editorial is already tucked in for the night, so there's nothing live about it for you. I want to change things up to see if it helps me enjoy the show more.
8:59PM: Husband has been out to dinner with the boss. Is due home with wine. How many of you watch Arrow? I keep meaning to, but my TiVo fills up quickly and I keep deleting it.
9:01PM: The Founder questions John. When he's not forthcoming, the Founder telekinetically tortures him. Stephen busts in and stops it. The Founder lets Stephen know John killed his dad (Roger). Huh. I thought Stephen picked that up from John at the end of last week.
9:04PM: Husband not yet home with wine. Do I have to watch this sober?
9:05PM: Cara and Russell kidnap Morgan from Montauk. Cara proposes an exchange to Jed: Morgan for John. I propose an exchange to anyone: Cara for Morgan (and John, of course).
9:10PM: John tells Stephen about "killing" Roger. Stephen is sure his father is alive, and Thanatos is real. He will break John out of Ultra.
9:12PM: Stephen's mom is on this week. She tells Stephen to talk and when he asks about his father, she shuts him right down. What? I don't know what's going on here, but by Marla's reaction to the term "Thanatos Project," she surely knows more than she's admitting.
9:14PM: Dude, where's my wine?
9:15PM: Jed goes to John, kisses him and says, "Goodbye, son." John spits in his face. Why do I feel like Jed imparted his thoughts to John and that John's spittle was, in part, just covering? In his office, Jed reveals he knows Stephen didn't de-SUPE Cara. Stephen admits his crush. Since Jed has his own SUPE secret lovah, he tells Stephen this is pardonable, admits his attachment to Morgan and says the SUPES are threatening to kill her unless John is freed. Jed says while he can't, Stephen can.
9:18PM: Flashback. I was right. Where are my fabulous cash prizes? Jed slipped John keys to his cuffs and told him to wait for Stephen. Maybe it's the fake live bloggery, but Stephen and John's escape is maybe fun and exciting. Commercial.
9:20PM: Finally, wine. Pause TiVo. Open wine. Pour wine. Drink wine.
9:24PM: Stephen TPs Jed to Montauk for the exchange. Surprise! Jed wants the SUPES to keep Morgan with them. Since John escaped, the Founder is going to be all over him. He doesn't want to be able to give up Morgan's location.
9:26PM: At the lair, Stephen and John practice teleporting while stopping time, in order to find Roger and Limbo. There's discussion about Roger and telling Cara that John "killed" Roger, but it will keep 'til the full weecap.
9:28PM: At home, Stephen hears Marla wondering how he knows about Thanatos. She gives him a box of Roger's research, but tries to warn him off pursuing it. Stephen finds some sort of drive. Back at the lair, he has TIM load it. It's a video of Roger and Crick. I love Crick.
9:32PM: John takes Cara aside and admits he "killed" Roger. Cara backs away, clearly in search of underage tail. Oh, and now she says the first time she took a seat on the kiddie ride, it was John's fault. Frigging Cara.
9:37PM: Stephen TPs to Crick's cabin. I'd totally do that if I could. We'd have tea… at least until there was wine. Crick is packing up and explains his exodus as if he's Bilbo going off to live with the elves. Stephen asks if Roger had to die/kill himself in order to reach Limbo. Crick deflects. Stephen says it worked. Crick unloads some pastoral wisdom, but before he can make any revelations he's gunned down by Ultra snipers, followed by The Founder, who can feel that a SUPE had just been on the premises. You killed Crick, you bastards! I was having the best time with this episode, until this moment. Now, even my wine tastes of ashes.
9:41PM: Stephen reports back to the SUPES about my dearly, departed Crick. Stephen wants John to kill him, so he (Stephen) can bring Roger home.
9:48PM: Stephen has the SUPES and Astrid over for a pizza party. It's The CW -- just go with it. Why am I so glad to see Astrid? I'm really glad to see Astrid. Later, when they're alone, Stephen tells Astrid he's going to try to bring home his dad. Astrid twigs to the fact that this is a goodbye party, but Stephen denies that. When she offers to go with him, he tells her she can't and promises he'll be back.
9:51PM: Jed -- who had Morgan over for a nighttime playdate -- gets out of bed, arms himself, then frigging covers Morgan's head with a pillow. He says, "I'm so sorry, Morgan," then shoots her in the head (through the pillow). This is a fake-out for the Founder's benefit, right? RIGHT?
9:53PM: The Founder asks Jed if it's done. When Jed confirms it is, the Founder asks Jed to show him. Jed lets him dig in. The Founder sees the whole bloody (well, feathery) scene. As he leaves, the Founder confides that his patience for Jed is because of Stephen, who the Founder says they're grooming for their ultimate purpose. Did anyone else just go to a Steve Martin "special purpose" place? No? Well, then you're too damn young.
9:54PM: When Cara trots into the lair, she finds Morgan there and still alive. Thank goodness Jed was in on the whole fake-out.
9:55PM: John reluctantly prepares to kill Stephen. It involves Phenobarbital, because they have no wine. TIM points out the irrationality of their plan. Cara needs the time of Stephen's brain death, so she can shoot him up with epinephrine. John injects Stephen with the Phenobarbital. TIM monitors Stephen's vitals. As the boy crashes, Cara coaches Stephen to "do it now." Stephen stops time as Cara is readying the epinephrine, but of course she doesn't know that, because she is stopped in time. When time starts back up, Russell asks if it worked. Cara can't reach Stephen, telepathically. TIM tells them they have a minute to revive him, before Stephen's brain is damaged. Around 20 seconds, Cara injects Stephen. When nothing happens, John bags Stephen, while Cara performs chest compressions. TIM calls time. Cara begs Stephen not to leave them. The boy seems dead for longer than necessary, but then gasps back to life. When Cara asks what happened, Stephen says, "I saw him. We have to find my dad's body." Title card.
I'll be back tomorrow with a hangover and the full weecap. In the meantime, please grade the episode at the top of the page, and then come on over to the show thread where we don't worry 'bout tomorrow, anyway.
As I did with the recaplet, I'm trying a different approach to this weecap. The Tomorrow People is not built to withstand the sort of scrutiny to which I usually subject my shows. Treating it the way I treated something like Lost feels akin to expecting a toddler to behave like a ten year old. Not to mention, it's sucking out all the fun. So here's the deal: I'm playing a little game against myself and the clock. I'm starting this weecap on December 12, 2013 at 2:00 PM. I am going to watch the episode through, and try to pause as little as possible (e.g. if there's a line worth quoting verbatim). For this weecap's base, I'm using the notes I took during the original broadcast, most of which ended up as-is, in my recaplet. After I'm done watching, I'm giving myself an hour to expand on my notes until they approximate a weecap. When that time is up, I will only proof it and send it to Editorial. You ready? Okay!
After sitting through the opening narration about the premise and then the "Previouslies," we open at Ultra. In a holding cell, the Founder questions John. I can't keep calling this guy The Founder or even just Founder. The show's failure to incorporate character names into the dialogue was already bugging me. Now this guy doesn't even have a real name. I hate floundering for something to call these... oh, wait. That's it! Founder, I hereby dub thee Flounder.
Flounder says if John gives up the free Tomorrow People, they'll kill him quickly. John laughs, so Flounder telekinetically (TK) tortures him. It seems that the room is neither lined with Unobtainium nor equipped with D-chips, or that Flounder is ultra-powerful. At some point, Flounder frees John and allows him to fight back, but only so he can TK-stop John's fist mid-air. "I broke out before you were born, boy." I wonder if Flounder can TK-twirl is his mustache. Stephen busts in to stop the torture. Flounder says that like Roger before him, Stephen's compassion is misplaced. He then urges John to confess what he did to Roger. Stephen realizes Flounder is implying that John was behind Roger's death. Stephen calls Flounder a liar. Huh. I thought Stephen picked up John's memory of Roger's death at the end of last week. I guess
the scene should have been less ambiguous I was wrong. Eventually, John says, "Sorry, Stephen." Stephen storms out, as you do when your hero -- who's girl you banged -- turns out to be your personal, super-powered Inigo Montoya.
