Let's just fast forward over Patrick Thomas, 20, from Nashville, because his headgear has foretold his destiny. As he starts to sing, Blake plays hard to get and lets Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green pretend they are vying for the singer. Blake eventually hits the button, but only after making Patrick sweat a bit. Cee Lo feigns interest well enough with a "we're different, we could make beautiful music together" shtick. Christina determines that he is cute and asks him to take his hat off, then his pants off. The kid blushes and the camera cuts to his very clean-cut parents fake smiling backstage. You can see his mother briefly wonder if he's wearing clean britches, just in case he is willing to do whatever Christina asks. Adam says something to mask his pain and then Blake is all like, whatever, I'm your mentor, why continue with this charade? Patrick nods and the deal is sealed with a man hug.
Next up is a father of four with a checkered past of drugs and alcohol. As you are aware from countless other sob stories heard before auditions on other shows that are not to be named, it's been a long journey for this guy to get to this point. He pulls out a guitar and starts singing a bluesy rock number. The judges make him suffer for it and Christina makes all sort of "Maybe? Should I?" faces that are more convincing than most of her acting in Burlesque, but ultimately none of the judges turn around. While clearly this guy was meant for Adam Levine, Blake thought he would have been a good country singer, but not good enough. So the guy is out and can start the downward spiral back into addiction or at least anonymity.
