Carson Daly Fails to Empathize, Part 2

I like Ryan, he seems like a nice, normal dude. He sounds like that guy who is really good at karaoke, though, and he might have picked a bad song. He's shaky and uneven, and no one turns around. I bet LeAnn Rimes is pissed and Ryan Fogarty will not be allowed to work for her anymore, or go out with them to karaoke for elaborate ruses.

I enjoyed the spliced-together group of no-button push performances, which included a nervous version of "Replay," a weak rendition of "Poker Face," and a hilariously poor white guy version of "(Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay." Surely, these performances were even worse with their lowest moments featured. Also, those people don't have congestive heart failure, not like Mackenzie Bourg, who contracted a virus that shut down all his organs and almost killed him. He was put into a medically-induced coma and now he has to tell the heartless Carson Daly about it.

"I can't even imagine," Carson Daly stutters, having just awoken from his own self-tanner-induced coma that he placed himself in this summer in preparation for Season 3. Producers warned Carson about being too orange, and his face looking even more unnatural and wooden, but he wouldn't listen. "So headstrong, that Carson Daly," Carson imagined them saying as he lowered himself into the tanning bed set to "gristle."

In spite of the sad story, I like Mackenzie's vocal style. I also like his Super Bowl-lovin' dad's enthusiasm from the back room: "COME ON. COME ON, YES! YEAH BABY, CEE LO PUSHED THAT BUTTON YEAH!" Because when your son is made of glass, he's probably not going to be doing a lot of team sports. You gotta get your kicks where you can, dad.

A rarity on the show so far, Cee Lo was the only coach who pushed his button. I was proud of Mackenzie for only telling the Super Bowl element of his story and not the congestive heart failure part. The judges pander and play a bit before turning him over to Cee Lo. Mackenzie's dad's enthusiasm is enough to put anyone into a coma, but I like it in juxtaposition with Mackenzie's gentle nature/bones.
