Jonny Gray is next to perform, and Carson doesn't want us to forget that he was in the Air Force. You know, since it's Veteran's Day and all. Cee Lo chose "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins for Jonny. I can't not love this song, so Jonny had better nail it.
Jonny is differentiating himself tonight by not wearing a hat. I wish he'd do something with his hair, though, he looks like a girl fresh out of college who just learned how to condition. Jonny sings the song well, but the best part of the performance is Cee Lo's joyous reaction to all his favorite moments. Jonny ends the song by asking us to "just think about it," and I just might.
Cee Lo is excited for Jonny to move beyond the competition and write his own music. That's what this should be about, right? The contestants as artists and not as cover performers? Adam says he noticed some rhythmic issues but Jonny recovered from the wonkiness. Carson thanks Jonny for his service, giving him the awkward cool-guy handshake and hug.
Team Adam's frontrunner, Tessanne Chin, performs next. Adam has rewarded Tessanne with "My Kind of Love" by Emeli Sande. Tessanne relates to this song, as she manages with every song. She loves her husband, and is ready to sing this for him.
Tessanne is just as perfect as we expect her to be, and her hair is curly this time. I will say, though, very quietly, that she's so good it's almost getting boring. We can worry about that in a couple weeks, though.
Adam congratulates Tessanne on having it all and says she showed some of her rawness. Christina calmly says, "yeah, it was good, very sweet." She is playing the game, and I admire her for that.
Another frontrunner, Matthew Schuler, has the next song. Matthew is paying tribute to his gospel roots this week with "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley. OK, just because it has the word "Hallelujah" does not even make it a gospel song. This song needs to be put down. It's too manipulative and no one has ever gotten bad feedback for it. Matthew is better than this, especially with the overwrought cathedral backdrop.
Matthew sounds great on it, of course. The audience makes little hearts with their hands and I see some people still don't really know how to do that. It's basically flawless, and Christina quietly congratulates herself. Everyone compliments Matthew except Adam, who has donned Christina's black leather jacket so he could fit in and make it about him.
