"I was young, too, once upon a time," Christina thinks to herself. Cee Lo likes the song choice and the confidence, Adam is blown away, and Blake tries to give a compliment but ends up admitting that people usually forget about the first performance when it comes time to vote. Christina carefully doled out just enough compliment to maintain control but still appear encouraging.
For a moment, we check in with Christina Milian in our "fancy skybox." Christina asks the contestants, "you have a lot of fun together, right? Does it feel like a dorm? I bet it feels like a dorm," and then that's the end of that.
Terry McDermott sings next. He chose "Summer of '69." Terry knows how to pick his music, but I'm interested to see what he would be like as a modern, original artist. We won't find out this week. Terry is in his wheelhouse, and flawless as usual. His haircut sort of makes him look like a little lesbian, but I'm not mad at it.
Christina notes that Terry sings on his tiptoes, and thinks it's cute. Hearing Terry talk about it in his accent is even cuter and my swimsuit area is like, "VOTE FOR HIM." Blake tells Terry that he reminds him of everything he loves about rock 'n roll. That was a nice compliment he stole from Cee Lo.
Carson "just noticed" "our friends" from the "new hit" TV show, Guys With Kids sitting in the front row and spotlight. I guess they had nothing better to do.
Melanie Martinez sings next, and I've decided I adore her. I am also weirdly liking the way Adam is slowly turning into a dad from a '50s sitcom. Adam gave Melanie "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes to sing this time. Adam tells her if she wants to win, now is the time to "go off," and "go crazy," and "leave it all out there."
I like Melanie's rehearsal look better than this infantilized thing she's doing now. It's not her best performance, but her voice is still one of the few I'd enjoy hearing and recognize on the radio. Blake is happy that Melanie is playing an instrument again and knows the song because there's a country cover of it. Christina doesn't really care for Melanie because she doesn't belt. Christina even said she is waiting for Melanie to jump off a cliff. Cee Lo thinks it was the coolest version of the song he's seen. Adam congratulates himself on allowing Melanie to do this rendition of the song that Cee Lo liked so much.
The next contestant, Cody Belew meeting Jennifer Hudson, is a great time on this show. Cody calls it "a moment" in his thick Southern accent, and Jennifer seems equally delighted by Cody. Cody chose "Crazy in Love" by Beyonce. Jennifer Hudson obviously adores Cody, and gave helpful feedback, too. I don't think Cody's crazy Mad Max top is going to help his votes, though.
