White House Residence. Jed is telling a story about taking Leo fishing. Abbey and Debbie have joined the group. Jed took Leo camping and fishing when Leo was trying to quit smoking. Apparently, Leo kept sneaking away for a smoke, so Jed took him in a boat to the middle of the lake and wouldn't let him return to shore until the bucket was full of fish. So Leo grabbed the shotgun they had to protect themselves from bears and started shooting the water until there were enough dead fish to fill the bucket. Abbey watches Jed tell the story and does not seem happy. The story is amusing, but nobody really laughs. Debbie, Jed's other wife, has the same concerned eyes as Abbey. Abbey tells everyone that it's time to call it a night, and Jed resists. But she is not one to be trifled with, and the guests all say their goodbyes. Debbie tells Jed to sleep in, and that she'll cancel his early morning meeting. Josh is the last to leave, and Jed approaches him and tells him it's a bad idea for Santos to get involved in the Speaker's race. Josh tells him that he told Santos the same thing, and Jed asks, "Did he listen?" Josh is not sure. But we are, thanks to the miracle of television. Josh whispers to Jed, "I know I was supposed to be doing this with Leo." Jed: "He loved you like a son. You know that, don't you? Leo and I are the past. You're the future. It's up to you now. We're counting on you." Josh leaves, and Jed is left alone with Abbey and his own grief. She takes his hand and kisses it. He returns the gesture.
Josh walks out the visitor's gate on the north side of the White House. The building is lit beautifully, as it always is at night. The gate slams behind him, and he starts walking east, along Pennsylvania Avenue. He stops when he's square in front of the White House, and looks back at it. And then he and his backpack turn and walk across Lafayette Square. And I do wonder where he's going, since both his office and his apartment are in a completely different direction. Maybe he's going to get a drink at the Hay Adams. Or maybe he heard that's how I walk home every night, and he wanted to see what it felt like to walk in my shoes.
