"I Need To Get Clean"

"I give you that." Omar says that a man's like that when he's got work to do. Stringer recaps, "I think you've done enough. Bird gone. Wee-Bey copped out to all them murders; he in jail now forever and a day. Stinkum? I mean, you closed the book on that nigger your damn self. Avon -- he out of pocket for the time being." "Leaving you," Omar surmises. Stringer supposes that Omar's looking for closure, but Omar snaps, "Lookit, man -- ain't no closure. Not unless Brandon gonna walk up out his grave and come up in this room right now. See, all I know is whoever did him that way, they gets got." Stringer claims that Brandon's murderer is still at large. Omar can't believe that now Stringer's going to claim he wasn't involved, but Stringer has apparently decided that that would be a bigger lie than even he could get away with ("An 'F' turns into a 'B' so easily! You got greedy"), and stagily takes off his glasses and rubs his eyes as he says he can't lie: "I put the motherfucking paper out on y'all. But y'all was fucking with my stash. Anything after that -- part of the game." Omar: "Maybe. But see, y'all went past that with Brandon." "That wasn't me," drawls Stringer. "That wasn't Avon, either. Bird and them were there to see it. But another man did all the extras. All that cigarette shit. All that bullshit with the eyes." Omar works his jaw as Stringer enumerates the gruesome particulars. Stringer goes on: "See now, this man -- he building a rep for himself, and he wants you bad. The brutal shit? That's his calling card. Little bowtie-wearing motherfucker from out of--" He looks up at Beefcake as he pretends not to remember: "NYC?" Beefcake nods. Stringer describes Omar's quarry further: "Yeah, small dude." Omar flares his nostril as he asks the man's name. "Brother Mouzone," Stringer tells him smoothly. "I know you heard of him, right?" Omar snorts. Stringer generously says that if Omar has ideas of hunting Mouzone down, Stringer could point him in the right direction. Omar furrows his brow as he asks why. Stringer confidentially says, "What happened to your boy was business. But how that shit happened -- you got a right to take that to heart. I figure that'll make us even." He ends by asking whether Omar wants to know where Mouzone is. Omar hates to co-operate, but his need to avenge Brandon -- still -- makes him nod.
