Cop shop parking lot. Horseface waits for the coast to be clear of detectives, walks up to an unattended white van, and peers inside. Checking around again, he walks to the driver's-side door, quickly breaks in, and skillfully hot-wires it. Seconds later, Horseface is rolling out of the parking lot, getting a nice salute from a uni as he goes by. Ladies and gentlemen: Baltimore's Finest.
Bunk and Lester bitterly trudge up a flight of stairs to the headquarters of the Port Police. As they enter, Lester bitches that a real police department would have an elevator. Huh, I kind of expected that complaint to come from the officer with love handles on his neck.
Beadie's sitting at her desk, apparently on hold, when Bunk and Lester enter and introduce themselves. She shakes hands, and motions to the phone, saying she's waiting for the Delaware River Detachment of the Coast Guard. Bunk asks what they know, and Beadie says that the Atlantic Light is on its way to the Port of Elizabeth; she's trying to get them to hold the ship. Lester asks whether anyone from Beadie's CID is working the case, and she says she heard there was an argument about jurisdiction, and that Bunk and Lester's colonel made everybody mad. She sighs apologetically: "All you get is me." Lester asks whether she's still on hold. She is, so he motions with his head toward the door, telling her they can call it in from the road. Beadie, looking awkward, hangs up and grabs her coat, asking Bunk, "You're with City Homicide?" He grunts his assent. Beadie: "You must know Jimmy McNulty." Bunk: "Yeah, he's dead to us." Ha! After fourteen shots of Jameson's, they're lucky he's not dead to everybody.
Crappy Boarded-Up Building Next To Some Train Tracks. Some cops enter, and find Valchek, sitting with his feet up, and Prez, holding up a doorway; Valchek tells them to make themselves at home. "I've seen worse," says...holy shit, it's Polk! That guy hasn't drunk himself to death yet? Actually, he looks pretty good; maybe he did go to dry out somewhere. Valchek reports that the building is the department's to use as an off-site; the furnace and the phones both work: "You'll need window units if you're going to be here come summer, but somehow, I've got a feeling that you gents will put together a case quicker than that." That's...generous. Valchek introduces the new arrivals to Prez, telling them that if they need anything from Valchek, they should go through Prez; if Polk remembers Prez from the last detail, he doesn't show it. Valchek gets up dramatically to announce, "Gentlemen, the target is Frank Sobotka, and anyone Frank Sobotka does his dirt with." Those incredibly detailed instructions having been delivered, Valchek hits the road, wishing his troops good hunting. Once he's gone, the one salient question comes from Polk: "So who signs the overtime slips?" Good to know these special details are still made up of the department's best and brightest. And...maybe Polk just looked better in gloomy lighting and is still a total drunk.
