Freamon is leaving the old Major Case detail office when Carver pulls up honking. After an exchange of pleasantries, Carver asks whether Freamon still has an interest in Marlo Stanfield. Freamon is a man of many interests, but Marlo happens to be high on the list. Carver hands over the purloined phone number. "That's his cell," Carver says, smiling. Freamon asks how he ever came into possession of such a thing. "Police work, detective," Carver says grandly. "Police work." Sounds a lot better than "For once, Herc's ethical lapses worked in our favor." As Carver drives off, Freamon grins and starts dialing the number. We hear Marlo pick up. "Yo, this the High Hat?" Freamon asks, adopting a remarkably natural patois. "Y'all still open for carry-out? I want some of that pepper steak." On the other end of the line, a not-especially-cordial Marlo tells Freamon he has the wrong number. If Freamon's smile is anything to go by, he has exactly the number he wants.
