"Dope On The Damn Table"

Outside the office, Daniels mutters, "Dope on the damn table." Just get a really small table; it'll look like more. Foerster sticks up for Burrell's asinine order: "It's like the man said. We're letting them know who we are." "Yeah?" spits Daniels. "And who the hell are we?" Foerster and Rawls, a couple of ass-covering, sycophantic functionaries, decide not to say so, and Daniels stalks off.

Conference room, probably at Levy's office. Levy has actually managed to produce Savino, and is telling everyone in the world (Ronnie, Bunk, Jay, Sideshow Mel, Paris Hilton, McNulty, and a stenographer, among others) that Savino hasn't been Mirandized, and that what he's about to say is "for purposes of a proffer." The cops agree, and Levy slides a bag across the table to Jay, who opens it and produces a taped-up bag of something white. "That's baking soda," says Levy, "which Mr. Bratton intended to sell to Orlando Blocker." Wow, I would have thought that $30,000 worth of baking soda would require a much bigger bag. Jay, trying to maintain his composure, asks where the money is, and Levy says that Savino didn't receive any: "He left it in the car when he went to retrieve the sham cocaine." I should note, by the way, that Savino looks totally bored -- possibly because he knows he's better off where he is than, say, Little Man is right now. McNulty sarcastically guesses that Savino doesn't know who the shooters are, and Jay pipes up that he wasn't in on the set-up, either. The camera gets close to Jay so that we can see how red and unshaven he is on Day 2 of this process as he crabs that it was dumb luck that Savino left Kima and Orlando and some strangers happened along to finish them off. "This is bullshit!" understates Bunk. "A police is down!" Levy carefully says that Savino had no idea Kima was a cop, and only planned to defraud Orlando of his money. Levy motions to a Ms. Nathan, apparently Ronnie's boss, who offers Savino "no charge if he gives [them] the shooters." She adds that if he testifies, they'll put him in Witness Protection. Levy sticks to his claim that Savino doesn't know anything about the shooting: the best they can do is charge Savino with distributing fake-ass drugs: "Three-year maximum, $5000 fine." "That's it?" snaps McNulty incredulously. Ronnie bitterly adds that they could have gone to felony fraud if Savino had taken the cash, but "the tape has him leaving the money." "Three years," mutters Jay angrily." Ms. Nathan says that since "a cop was shot," Savino's conviction will leave him doing "every damn day of the three." She's trying to sound tough, but...you know, three years for being an accessory to shooting a cop isn't really that big a deal, all things considered, which is pretty much what Savino says. Bunk mentions the $5000 fine: "Oh, shit -- you still up twenty-five [thousand], right?" Savino sort of shrugs. Jay snatches the baking soda, and Savino gets up for Bunk to cuff him. "Nicely done," squints McNulty at Levy, as if that fucker is still capable of feeling shame.
