Speaking of things getting heavy, Carver makes his way up to Cheryl and Kima's apartment like he's losing a fight through quicksand. He stares at the door for a moment, but can't work up the nerve to knock, and as he's turning to leave, Cheryl comes bustling out, coffee in hand, on her way to work. She starts in surprise to see someone there, and Carver apologizes. Chuckling, Cheryl says it's okay, she just scared him, in a way that lets us know she's never met Carver before. She heedlessly hurries past him, and Carver hesitantly calls out, "I, uh..." Cheryl turns, and Carver says he works with Kima. Cheryl nods, businesslike. Carver starts, "Kima, she--" "Kima's at work," says Cheryl. Carver shakes his head, and Cheryl gets it: "Wh-- what is she?" Carver rubs his neck. Cheryl gets an idea that Kima's not detained at a mani-pedi party.
