Outside, Bunk is on the phone, Jay far behind him looking through evidence, when suddenly both of them are distracted from what they're doing by the sounds of struggle in an interrogation room. And if these fuckers are startled by it, you know it's hardcore.
When Bunk and Jay bust into the interrogation room, the table's on its side; Bubbs is still cuffed to it, and is trying vainly to protect himself on the floor, and Holley is just going to town on him. Jay pulls Holley off Bubbs, who squeaks that he wants to talk to Kima. "You CAN'T, motherfucker!" barks Holley. Bubbs asks for McNulty, then, and repeats, "This shit ain't right!" Jay hustles Holley out of the room, possibly to ice his hands.
Roof. Santangelo consults a Savino mug shot, and then raises his binoculars to scan the courtyard. He tells Herc, "Mope ain't around," but presently Herc spots Bodie, going for the phone, and calls it in to Lester. Herc snaps some shots of Bodie waiting, but no one calls back. After a moment, Bodie looks up the building: a window opens, and a brown paper bag is tossed out, falling right into Bodie's hands. Herc photographs the whole transaction, and Santangelo asks, "What the fuck was that?" "You don't know?" says Herc smugly. "We just caught a re-up off the Tower stash." Herc calls Lester to tell him the good news. Maybe it's so good that McNulty will take his shirt off again.
Speaking of McNulty, he's taking another self-pitying pull off his bottle, sitting alone, half in shadow, in the detail office. "Put that away," comes Daniels's voice, but McNulty ignores him. "Put that away and work the case," says Daniels, punching every word. Hey! Why didn't we get to see him change into his clean shirt? "Can I ask you something?" McNulty asks hoarsely. Daniels blinks by way of reply, so McNulty deliberately screws the cap back on and slams the bottle on Daniels's desk. Daniels blinks again, and McNulty asks his question: "How much of this case would you give up to get her back?" "That's not the point," Daniels murmurs. "How much?" McNulty presses. Without hesitating, Daniels replies: "All of it. But it doesn't work that way. You can't give it back." McNulty swallows, trying to hold it together, and Daniels picks up a sheet off his desk: "I'm sitting with a hospital progress report that shows no fucking progress. She's not conscious. She's intubated. She's had a trach and a lung collapse. And if she's got a shred of luck, the shot she took to the neck didn't catch any spine." The camera pushes in close to McNulty, under his creepy half-shadowed face, as he works his jaw a moment and then declares, "It wasn't worth it." Daniels sighs, because he can't disagree. Fortunately for him, Prez shows up in the doorway to say that Homicide's calling for McNulty. Daniels gets up to give McNulty some privacy, grabbing the bottle and stopping at his shoulder to order McNulty, "Do your job." He leaves, and McNulty picks up the phone. It's Bunk, who starts nicely by asking how McNulty's "doing with it." McNulty stoically says he'll live. Pleasantries concluded, Bunk says that Holley may have beaten up one of Kima's CIs "on spec." McNulty describes Bubbs as "a short guy, mumbles a lot," which is funny; I wouldn't have thought of Andre Royo as short, but maybe being next to Sonja Sohn all the time makes him look tall by comparison. Bunk tells McNulty to come by and "squelch this shit before it gets out of hand."
