McNulty sighs, and somewhat insincerely says that he's really sorry. He adds that he and Phelan "go back a little," and that Phelan was the one who started all this by asking McNulty about it. Of course, McNulty started THAT by showing up to watch the proceedings of a case he wasn't involved in, but let's not split hairs. Rawls hoarsely tells McNulty what a drag it was to get questioned about murders that "don't mean a shit to anybody." Hey, some of those could have been civilians, bitch! McNulty -- again, disingenuously -- says that Phelan asked a question, and McNulty answered it: "I didn't know he was going to call anybody." Again with the fingers, as Rawls gets the last word: "You have my attention, Detective. My complete, undivided attention." McNulty gets up, and Rawls asks where he's going. "I'm 8 to 4," he replies. "No," Rawls informs him. "You're typing...Deputy wants a report on his desk at 0800...Clean, no typos; make it look right, then put my name on it...And when you list the cases, put a little dot next to each one. Deputy likes dots." Well, bullet points do make a list easier to read, but I sense that this is not the time for a discussion on typography. McNulty calls after the departing Rawls that he really is sorry. I'm a bit sad that we don't get a shot, in response, of Rawls shooting him the birds again, but I'll just assume he's doing it whether we can see it or not.
