Behind Omar, Lester motions with his notepad, and McNulty hops up and joins him behind a partition as Kima continues talking with Omar on the other side. Lester tells McNulty about the sequence of calls they logged the night of Brandon's murder. As Lester wraps it up, we see Daniels striding into the work area and into his office, behind McNulty. "This is the murder, right here," says McNulty, of the phone and pager records. He happens to glance up and see Daniels, settling back into his office, and as Lester says that they think some of the calls came from the pay phone outside Greek's.
At this, McNulty grabs Lester's pad and rushes into Daniels's office, smacking the paper down on the desk and snapping, "He's on you. We're up on those pay phones Tuesday night, we catch that murder -- shit, we get there before the murder. It's all here on the pen register." He angrily points to illustrate the trail: "This one calling that one, that one calling back. We're up on those pay phones when we should be, and we have him cold. But we're not up in time, are we? In this case, we're never where we need to be." Daniels still has yet to do anything but glare as McNulty stomps out, slamming the door. Omar and Kima look up as the raging Irishman grabs his jacket and leaves the office, Lester following silently. "Bad time for y'all?" says Omar, probably grateful for a little drama from strangers to take his mind off himself.
