Ellicott, NY, 10:47 AM. That estate is so not in upstate New York; that's Pasadena, and if I had a dollar for the number of times I've driven past that house in my life, I wouldn't have to look for a new job. Up pulls the Sensible Car. Out pops Doggett, with Leyla trotting after him. They watch as the coroner carts out Grandpa's body -- which, Leyla exposits, was found in the woods about fifty yards past the house. "Maybe we should start there," she offers. "Let's start in the house," Doggett decides. "Okay, then," Leyla says, and scampers after him.
In the cabin, which turns out to be the estate's gatehouse, Leyla continues to play Exposition Ball, telling Doggett that Grandpa was the caretaker of the estate. The police think that he was murdered, because the body was dumped, and because his son, Gary Gandolnotfini, is missing. He's the chief suspect, she finishes. Doggett, who's been poking around the gatehouse while Leyla fills him in on the details, points out that the person who killed Grandpa did it without leaving a mark, suggesting premeditation, which is inconsistent with dumping the body and fleeing the scene. Leyla is impressed by Doggett's steel-trap mind, and starts to take notes, while he fiddles around some more in the house. He's found a sort of clear slimy substance, both on the floor near the chair and on the windowsill. Leyla's very excited by the slime. "This really is an X-File, isn't it?" she asks, breathlessly. Doggett just stares at her. "Congratulations," he says, dryly. I still sort of like her. At least she's enthusiastic, unlike the bunch of sad sacks I've been dealing with since November.
Outside, Leyla tells Doggett that she asked the Buffalo PD to run the slime to the lab and get them the results ASAP. Doggett sort of sighs, and wonders how much field experience she has. Leyla blinks and tells him that she has no field experience; she used to process Mulder's and Scully's travel reports, up in Accounting. "Kersh handed you this job, didn't he?" Doggett asks. Leyla indicates that he did. Doggett, walking deeper into the woods, informs her that she's being used. Leyla stops short. "I don't think you understand, Agent Doggett," she spits perkily. "I begged for this assignment." Apparently, she's a bit of a Mulder/Scully groupie -- probably the only one in the entire FBI. Doggett snarks that she isn't qualified for this assignment. Leyla counters that maybe she isn't, not on paper, but she knows the files inside and out, and she's really excited to be working on them. "Aren't you?" she asks. Doggett shakes his head sort of wearily and goes back to examining the foliage. I wonder exactly how much information Mulder and Scully had to attach to those travel reports. I can see the expense reports now: "Breakfast with alien abductee: $15.78. Gas: $19.23. Getting anally probed: Priceless." Doggett finds more slime near where the body was recovered, but there are no footprints leading to it. "You know what that could be? It could be bile. From a liver-eating mutant," Leyla offers cheerfully. "This is not a liver-eating mutant, Agent Harrison," Doggett says. "It could be an alien who shed its skin," Leyla offers. Doggett just looks at her. "You don't think it's that, either," she says, disappointed. Aw, come on, people, she's cute! I think she's cute. At least she's not lecturing Doggett about his feelings. Anyway, Doggett tells her to take a sample to send to the lab for comparison with the slime from the house, and sends her off with a pat on the head and a cookie. More or less. Then he stares, pained, into the distance. Behind him, a LizardMan slithers away. Doggett trudges further into the woods. He's so alone in the world.
