LBO. Scully furrows her brow. "You're saying that I actually hit him two times?" she asks. Mulder nods, but tells her that the bullets had no effect. "And then he sort of leapt at me like a flying squirrel?" Scully asks. Mulder confirms this, although, he says, he wouldn't use the phrase "flying squirrel" in their meeting with Skinner. Scully purses her lips.
Back to Mulder Vision. Mulder explains that, once he recovered, he knew what he had to do. He breaks one of the motel chairs into small, stake-size pieces.
Cut to the woods, where Mulder is chasing Ronnie Strickland. Chasing, chasing. Chasing. More chasing. At last, Mulder catches Ronnie and drives the stake into his chest.
LBO. Scully shakes her head. "Mulder, it's not just me," she says. "Nobody in their right mind will ever believe that story." Mulder shrugs. "Well, they'll have to once they examine Ronnie Strickland's body," he says. Scully looks unsure and consults her watch.
Speaking of examining Ronnie Strickland's body, let's head over to the Dallas Regional Pathology Lab, where Ronnie's poor cold corpse is spread out on an examining table, all ready for the coroner to dig in. The stake is still embedded in his chest. The coroner -- let's call him Steve -- removes the sheet from the body and blinks, hard. "Probable cause of death?" he asks under his breath. "Gee, that's a tough one." He wrenches the stake out of Ronnie's body and walks away from the table -- presumably to fetch his tools, or bag the stake or something. Behind him, Ronnie sits right up and heads for poor hapless Steve. Steve turns, tools in hand, just in time to find Ronnie leaning over him, all green eyes and hissing. He's mid-hiss when he realizes that he's missing his fangs. He feels for them with his tongue, looking perturbed, then shrugs and goes for Steve anyway.
Scully and Mulder sit in Skinner's outer office, waiting to go in and try to get themselves out of this latest jam. Scully twiddles her thumbs. Mulder cracks his knuckles. She leans over to straighten his tie. Mulder lets her at it for about half a second, then pushes her aside. She shoots him a dirty look. Skinner's phone rings, and our heroes listen sadly as Whatshername, Skinner's secretary/Scully's twin sister/stand-in tells the caller that Skinner's about to go into a meeting that could very well last several hours. Scully sighs and leans over. "Please just keep reminding him that you were drugged," she whispers to Mulder. "Will you stop that?" he hisses. "It couldn't hurt," she replies. "Stop it!" Mulder squeaks.
