Kids Today! I Blame the Rap Music.

Fairfield County Social Services Hostel. 12:35 AM EST. Teena and her little bunny huddle in her bed as rain lashes the window. Lightning flashes. Teena looks at the porthole-like window in her door and squeezes her stuffed animal. Mark Snow cues up some very creepy music, which involves some kind of echoing timpani effect. It's very scary. I may hear it in my nightmares. Teena creeps out of bed and over to the door. Lightning crashes as a light comes on in the hallway, shining under the door. Teena struggles to shove a desk chair under the doorknob to prevent whoever's in the hallway from getting into her room. Someone rattles the door. Teena dives under her bed as the door bursts open. She waits, holding her breath, under the bed. Eventually, seeing no one enter the room, she climbs out from her hiding place. Just as she does, the lightning flashes and someone grabs her. Teena screams. Outside in the hall, the night nurse leaps out of her office and races down the hall, only to find Teena's room empty, the window open and rain soaking her bunny, which has been left behind on the windowsill.

Back to the Reardon crime scene in Marin. Mulder and Scully pull up in front of the house and get out of the car. Tapered pants do Gillian Anderson no favors. Like, did Chris Carter come into the wardrobe trailer one day, look her up and down and walk around her and cock his head to one side and then say, "No, I think she needs to look even shorter next to David. Also, she's still too pretty. Try something in taupe." Scully hustles over next to Mulder, held back by her ill-fitting suit and short little legs, and exposits that Teena Simmons was kidnapped last night, right out of the social services building, around 11 PM. "Looks like someone was afraid she might remember too much," she says. "Someone or something," Mulder says. "Good thing you're so cute, because you are a huge pain in my ass," Scully says. In her head. She actually just informs him that Connecticut state troopers had roadblocks set up within the hour, but they turned up nothing. "Maybe they weren't looking in the right direction," Mulder says, pointing to the sky as they climb the porch steps to the Reardon house. Mulder does the "shave and a haircut" knock (omitting the closing "two bits" part), and a little girl answers the door. She looks exactly like Teena Simmons. Mulder and Scully look flabbergasted. "Teena?" Scully asks. "No," the little girl replies. Her name is Cindy Reardon, she says, and she's lived in that house ever since she was born, eight years ago. Mulder and Scully and Cindy all stare at each other.
