The victim is wrapped up in a dirty towel on a cafeteria tray in the fridge in the sheriff's station. "We don't have a lab or a morgue," Sheriff Taylor explains, before telling then that he's got "a cleaner room" elsewhere. He's leading them to said cleaner room when a young man strides in the door. "By the way, this is my deputy, Barney," Sheriff Taylor says. "Fife?" Mulder yelps. "Paster," the kid spits, irritated. Heh. Mulder and Scully follow Sheriff Taylor into....
...the tiniest bathroom ever. "I could use a little more elbow room," Scully says, cramming herself between the wall and the sink. Mulder inches in next to her. Taylor smiles apologetically, explaining that he doesn't want anyone to walk in on them, and the bathroom is the only room that locks. Mulder suggests that Taylor just lock the office up entirely. "Everyone knows I never lock the door," Sheriff Taylor says kindly. He's just so nice. I hate when they kill him later. Oh, come on. You knew that was coming. He leaves them to it.
Scully somehow manages to put on her latex gloves without elbowing Mulder in the Adam's apple. She peels the towel away from the body. "Oh my God," she says. Mulder immediately looks away from the body and up at the wall in horror. Scully breathes that the baby appears to have been affected by "every rare birth defect known to science." And it looks it. The poor little thing barely appears to have a head, much less the requisite number of limbs. ["It actually looks a lot like the pig corpses in the butchers' windows in Chinatown." -- Wing Chun] Scully tells Mulder that she'll have to order DNA typing, but that, clearly, the victim suffered all kinds of abnormalities. Hey, Scully? That DNA typing thing? Make a note. Just write it down. It's a good idea, and one you might need to remember some time in the future. "I guess we can rule out murder as the cause of death, then," Mulder offers, still looking at the wall. Scully muses that she's not so sure about that. She takes out a scalpel and gets going with the Y-incision. Mulder stares bravely at the floor. Scully tells him the baby's got dirt in its nose and mouth, indicating that soil was inhaled at some point. "There's something rotten in Mayberry," Mulder says.
