Mulder sighs. "I believe that I sat in a motel room like this with you when we first met. And I tried to convince you of the truth. And in that respect I succeeded. But in every other way, I've failed." He finally looks over at her. "You don't believe that, either," Scully tells him. Mulder blinks. "I've been chasing after monsters with a butterfly net," he says. "You heard the man today. He said I can't change that." Scully makes a thoughtful face. "You wouldn't tell me, not because you were afraid, or broken," she says, "but because you didn't want to accept defeat." Mulder nods. "I was afraid of knowing what it would do to you," he says slowly, finally turning to look at her. "I was afraid that it would crush...your spirit." Scully tilts her head and almost smiles at him. "Why would I accept defeat?" she asks. "Why would I accept it if you won't? Mulder, you say that you failed. But you only fail if you give up. And I know you. You can't give up." Mulder closes his eyes. "That's what I saw in you when we first met," Scully tells him. He almost smiles. "It's what made me follow you. Why I'd do it all over again," she says. Mulder opens his eyes and turns and looks right at her. "Look what it's gotten you," he says. Tears hover at the edge of Scully's lashes. "And what has it gotten you?" she asks him. "Not your sister. Nothing that you've set out for. But you won't give up, even now." She reaches out and takes his hand. He squeezes it. "You've always said that you want to believe," Scully says. "But believe in what, Mulder? If this is the truth than you've been looking for, then what is left to believe in?" Mulder thinks about it. "I want to believe that...the dead are not lost to us," he says, hesitantly. "That they speak to us. As part of something greater than us. Greater than any alien force. And if you and I are powerless now, I want to believe that if we listen to what's speaking, it can give us the power to save ourselves." Scully smiles at him, slowly and sadly. "Then we believe the same thing," she tells him. The Piano of One Minute Left sings sadly in the background. Mulder reaches out and touches her necklace. He looks at it, then up at her. He runs his thumb over her lips. She kisses it. Then Mulder climbs on the bed and gathers Scully into his arms. The theme song begins to sing softly in the background. "Maybe there's hope," Mulder says. He rests his forehead against hers and closes his eyes. She watches him for a moment and then closes her own. Fade to black. Sniff.
