Speaking of Doggett, he's lying shirtless on his carpet while Absalom tapes a revolver to his back and tells him that they're going to get "what that man at the White House died for." He instructs Doggett to concentrate on not screwing up.
FBI evidence room. Scully is shocked, shocked, that Mulder is doing something outside FBI guidelines. Has pregnancy given her amnesia? Where's she been for the last eight years? Anyway, Mulder's going through Census Guy's personal stuff while Scully stands there looking shocked, even though this totally ought to be old hat by this point. Blah blah risk the consequences, blah blah you don't get it, Scully, blah blah defies all logical explanation, blah blah that's just the way the X-Files is, or used to be. Mulder just doesn't want what happened to him to happen to anyone else. Scully looks pained some more. Is the AlienMiracleBaby giving her gas? She points out that Mulder could go to prison. "Compared to being buried alive, prison would be a Princess Cruise," Mulder snarks. Scully shakes her head and checks to make sure that no one's coming down to the evidence room. Mulder starts to fiddle with Census Guy's computer. The hard drive is all screwy and encrypted. Mulder begins to remove the hard drive. "I'm booking myself on that Princess Cruise," he says. Scully takes the hard drive from him and puts it in her pocket. "I'll book it for you," she says.
Federal Statistics center, Crystal City, Virginia, 1:11 AM. Doggett and Absalom approach the front door. Doggett whips out the old badge, and the guard lets them in. ["Absalom shows no ID and looks all squirrelly, but he doesn't arouse any suspicion at all." -- Wing Chun] Of course, they pass under an infrared scanner, which the guard manipulates to see the gun taped to Doggett's back. He picks up a phone and makes a call.
Inside, Doggett tells Absalom that he has no idea where they're going. Absalom needs to get to the census database room, and then he wants Doggett to call the FBI and tell them that Doggett won't be coming into work until someone in power takes Absalom seriously. Doggett hypothesizes that the Feds already know about Absalom's gun, due to aforesaid infrared scanner. Absalom would hate to see Doggett die in vain. Doggett would like to know what he's dying for. Absalom snits that the census data contains proof that aliens are living among us. Doggett is all, whatever with you people and the aliens! Just as they get to the data room, more anonymous guard guys with guns surround them. Absalom wildly announces that he has a loaded gun. Doggett pleads for the guards to listen to the crazy man with his life in his hands. Lots of yelling. Absalom gets shot right through the head and Doggett falls to the ground. Thank God, the boring one has kicked the bucket.
